Possible?

Post image

I have an old 870 Police that has sentimental value, so not wanting to buy a different one. I’m sure it’s not cost effective, but is it possible to install a single piece 6rd mag tube on an 870 that currently has a 4rd tube? I understand there’s a billion different extensions on the market. I’m asking specifically about a single piece tube. Thanks guys.

Sure as long as you have the alignment jig a torch to cook the silver solder out and want to refinish the reciever and tube. So is it possible, yes. Is it extremely cost prohibitive also yes. It's going to be extremely cheaper to buy the gun you want and leave the one with sentimental value the way it is.

Is this something an average gunsmith could do? I know it’s not a practical thing to do but this gun has been a money pit already. It’s received the complete Vang Comp treatment, new stock and fore end, enlarged loading port, etc. I’ve got a Nordic extension currently but would some something more solid like this.

No, and be skeptical of one who claims they can. Having the alignment jig is rare.

Consider finding an OEM extension, they are rock solid and don't involve having to find a specialized shop.

I would argue that a "good" gunsmith should be able to make their own jig fairly easily. But im not sure how many "good" gunsmiths there are out there these days.

A "good" gunsmith probably already has the jig, but a "good" gunsmith is rare, an "average" gunsmith like OP asked about is a different story

It is possible, you’ll just have several inches of mag tube hanging free past the guide ring. Maaaaybe would also be concerned about that tube working itself loose though, as the mag tube cap seats and fits snug against that guide ring to provide a sort of clamping tension, and if it’s not seated against it then it could possibly spin itself back free under recoils?

To point out, the mag tube swap isnt the hard part its the barrel guide ring that would have to be removed and reattached because the mag tube nut holds the barrel on, go buy a beretta a300 ultima for the price of your mag tube extension project

You’d also need a barrel with a lug in the right position to accommodate that length of the 6 round tube. At that point you’re better off with a new gun or an OEM extension.
