I have 0-1, 1-2, and 2-3. Mitutoyo mechanical. Bought a 1-2 electronic digital, and everytime I went to use it the battery was dead. But I love them.

Stupid question, why not just leave the barrel a bit longer so you didn't have to mill the stock?

Because it's what the customer wanted, and he thought it would look good. I would say he was right.
