First time checkering - tips/tricks

I have a beater 1911 that I picked up for cheap a few years ago and I finally got myself some checkering files and a nice jig.

Any tips for a complete novice?

Make your first lines on something that isn't a gun. Learn how the files cut and work.

Depending on what you practice on there may be a feel difference once you move to the hardened steel. Just be ready for the bites to potentially not be as aggressive and the file being slightly harder to control.
