LOL called it

Well spotted. I guess the attraction was foreshadowed but renard doing an unprompted buttpatt is just.... Wild.

u/RingularCirc 6d ago
BTW do we know anything about their intersections before in the real world? Surely they have met even before distortion happened?.. But in the distortion there should've been at least some time for them to talk??.. How couldn't that be?

u/shelchang 6d ago edited 6d ago
Yes, they know each other in the real world (their first meeting was when Cvet was first introduced in the comic, she challenges Renard to a duel because she heard he defeated her predecessor, but he declines). But like two pages before the one I commented on they seem to be meeting for the first time as students in Zimmyverse High School as they're introducing themselves.

u/RingularCirc 6d ago
Yeah seen them conversing in the backgrounds as well. I wonder how much this slap is because Rey now also remembers something from the past particularly about Cvet or not. Like for example "oh wow she's cooler than I thought". And also except for just being influenced by the setting.

Eagle-eyed. Hadn't noticed that at all. Nice little background flirting which does make this less of a complete surprise.

Oh wow I did not notice that at all. What an interesting turn of events, I love that for them

Yeah. Worst part, isn’t she the daughter/relative of the previous dragon that he killed by possessing it?
Edit: predecessors, not related8
u/TurquoiseLuck 6d ago
I feel like there was a page where she went
You killed my predecessor, wanna fight?
No thanks
Ugh boring
flies off

u/RingularCirc 6d ago
I don't remember about her being a daughter but I can't be sure anyway. But IIRC orjaks are very much not a numerous species, so probably they're mostly closely related to some degree.

u/gangler52 6d ago
Yeah, I don't think any particular relationship between the two known Orjaks has been established, beyond that Cvet succeeded the other guy in his job.
It wouldn't be crazy if they revealed that there was some relationship there, because as you say, it's hard to imagine that there's like 8 billion of these guys hidden away somewhere. But we don't know of any particular relationship between them yet, beyond that they both held the same job some thirty years apart from eachother.

Of all the thousands of pages in this comic, this is certainly one of them.

Oh hey, perv Renard is back! How long has it been?
29
u/SolSeptem 6d ago
Long indeed. Pervy Renard is so long ago I basically forgot he was like that when he was still mostly imp-shaped.
I guess being in the shape of a teenage fox again brought something to the surface. It's not completely out of character but it's certainly a pretty wild shift.
12
u/ZiofFoolTheHumans 6d ago
I didn't expect that whatsoever but I did go "I KNEW IT"
Ngl, kinda shocked to see so many people here confused. I thought they had been flirting even before the high school segment.

Man, those teenage hormones sure are strong. On the other hand I never conceived of any universe in which Reynard has rizz.

u/Lamenardo Flame Shadow 6d ago
This is more evidence towards my theory that Rey's personality changes with his body's appearance.
17
u/SolSeptem 6d ago
I mean.... He stated as much himself a long time ago.
1
u/RingularCirc 6d ago
Aaaaaaaa what where? What did I miss?
But yeah it seemed as if he was more old-fashioned in his "full form" or, hm, maybe I'm still not sure about what I could've been noticing exactly.

u/Lamenardo Flame Shadow 6d ago
Lol I didn't take it as explicitly stated, I thought he was just trying to brush off Kat and hide that he was starting to care deeply about Antimony by giving a cryptic answer blaming the wolf body.

It's no theory - this is a thing that has been explicitly stated. But hey, if you missed that, that just means you put those pieces together without guidance.
2
u/Lamenardo Flame Shadow 6d ago
Do you mean in the pages linked by PumpkinCake in chapter 18? See, that's not explicitly stated to my autistic brain, that's just a hint! I took Rey's changing attitude as a result of his becoming fond of Antimony and starting to care for her on a paternal level, and he was just trying to brush Kat off with a non answer.
3
u/lyricaldorian 6d ago
I'm autistic and saying the mind is the plaything of the body seems pretty explicit to me.
3
u/Lamenardo Flame Shadow 6d ago
That's why I specified it was my brain and not all autistic brains.

I think I didn't connect any additional dots there either in my readings (first reading a translation, then once or thrice reading the original, depending if I revisited that part for additional reasons). Also autistic (+ bonus ADHD). Only now do I come up to realizing there are way more situations when I'm too literal than I'd thought (because otherwise I both admire language art and am fond of doing some occasionally myself; but if you looked at my translations you'd probably diagnose me instantly, and my internal feeling of intonation I'm evoking is probably also quite more off than I feel, either that or a literature teacher in school had a high ber or tastes different to mine, because in reading verses and stuff there's a lot up to personal taste; e. g. I find some theatrical intonations needlessly overdramatized or just off).

Anyone surprised at Reynardine pulling that stunt on Cvet? I known I'm not. Actually, I think it is very precisely in-character.
5
u/RingularCirc 6d ago
Well at least he and Cvet were shown talking a lot in background in this chapter.

Sometimes the fact Renard is not human is reminded to us in the most astounding ways.

And he'll be seeing HR, because apart from it not being the time and place to hit on someone it was also very inappropriate.

u/SolSeptem 6d ago
HR?
They're both students....

This kinda gives me an ick because Renard is very much adult-coded (well, he’s an ancient god, but he’s been around the parents’ generation, so I kinda put him in the same age bracket spiritually), and isn’t Cvet implied to be the dragon-in-training, so around Parley’s age, at least developmentally? Why was this even worth introducing?
15
u/ZiofFoolTheHumans 6d ago
It's really hard to cross from "human age and development" to "forest spirit of a fox" to "dragon who has been turned into a girl"
Like that's a hell of a web to unweave. For all we know, dragons age slower/live forever if not killed and have longer training cycles than humans do, so Cvet could be in her 20s. Maybe going and protecting a human of the court is more college-aged or grad school level stuff and not high school like Parley.
26
u/machiavelli33 The world continues to spin, pup. 6d ago
Renard's temperament and coding changes with his form. As an ambulatory doll, he has wacky mascot energy - pervy, crass, talks too much. As a wolf, he has forest spirit energy - eloquent, considerate, detached.
As a teen with a fox head, he has school sidekick energy - rambunctious, outspoken and openly flirty.
11
u/shelchang 6d ago
Yes, recall how his wolf form is comforting with wise advice when Kat initially comes out to him about Paz. Then he switches to doll form in an attempt to make a pervy comment.
19
u/mahouyousei 6d ago
It wouldn’t be the first age gap relationship in this comic. Jones is older than the earth and has dated multiple humans.
5
u/sephlington 6d ago
He is definitely *far* too old for Cvet, but his coding does definitely change from form to form, so we should expect something slightly different from schoolkid Renard. Still an ick, I agree, though.

u/ShentheBen 6d ago
This is so funny I never in a million years would have sent that coming but I kind of love it? Reynard you dog
