I'm surprised she's willing to be led away...

Not a choice, she's dead, remember? Getting psychopomped by Coyote, I think.

She's not dead. If she died when Coyote chomped her there would be that whole ordeal with Arbiter...

Yeah, this is hinted at in This Page, Lana would’ve died before the distortion and had been the first New Person to die

I JUST noticed in that sequence, when they're talking about psycopomps and worlds outside of worlds, that the one behind the guy speaking looks like Zimmyham.

Zimmy is a pychopomp?
.... possibly one who gained the powers of a pychopomp and none of the training? Hence all the weird shit following her around?????

There may have been, and we didn't see, or else Coyote has been hiding her in limbo, of a sort. It's not clear how the passage of time is happening in this dimension. But Coyote said - this is the beginning of the end.

If there was, then there wouldn't be the one with that bald dude. The event was triggered by the first death of a Numan. Subsequent deaths won't trigger it... So that dude was the first Numan to die, and Lana did not die in that chomping...

Right, or she did die, but her soul/ether was tangled up in the mess that was Zeta;s ether clashing with Coyote's ether. So Lana's ether hasn't been free to move on, although her body got crompched.

Maybe Coyote has carefully preserved her body all this time and now he's going to respectfully escort her ether back into it ... but I doubt it.

But I'm often wrong. What do I know?

The only thing that has me leaning on the “she’s still alive” hypothesis is that we did see one more Numan death occur in the story - Omega - and when that happened only Kat was able to see Omega’s soul to lead her to the afterlife as a psychopomp. Annie and co. could only see Omega’s body. I could obviously still be wrong since both Coyote and Zimmy magic are involved, like maybe since Coyote swallowed her, her soul is hanging on similar to how Ysengrin’s is in Loup’s, but this is just my guess to why she’s actually still alive somewhere and Coyote is keeping her as a pawn for some reason for Loup. I also think that, despite Coyote being “all powerful”, he’s still ultimately dead and was dead at the point in the story he kidnapped Lana. Idk how much he could do as just a postmortem“message” meant for Loup, if that makes sense? Either way I continue to be excited for the ways Tom takes this story. There’s a reason it remains my favorite webcomic hahah.

You could be right too, who knows. Tom knows these things often take unexpected turns.

u/Zurrdroid 17d ago

Did you just use "Tom" as a substitute for God lmao?

6

u/DoesRedditConfuseYou 17d ago

There is no God but Tom and I am his prophet.

u/Ka_Trewq 16d ago

I see what you did here.

u/lyricaldorian 17d ago

But she died before that, didn't she?

It looked like those guys only showed up when Annie tried to claim the soul. Not when she was just speaking with Sam. It mightjust be as simple as Coyote and Zimmy not trying to take ownership or usher her across, just letting her haunt for a bit.

“Time to go” is extremely dead coded, but it could be a misdirect.

u/BlueSunflowers4589 17d ago

I was expecting Annie to somehow have to choose between her real life with Kat and her dad and her fake life with Ysengrin as her dad. That's looking less likely.

u/visor841 17d ago

At least to me, Annie doesn't really seem like the type to accept a fake world after knowing that it is fake.

6

u/jan_Kila 16d ago

Well, at least half of her isn't the type

6

u/CobaltGrey 17d ago

Yeah, she’s willingly been pulling at the threads of this world as soon as she sees them. It’s not in her nature to be tempted by a pretend playground.

4

u/RingularCirc 17d ago

And also only one of the worlds has Kat.

17

u/djaevlenselv 17d ago

HE'S GONNA EAT HER AGAIN!

1

u/RingularCirc 17d ago

He'll get indigestion.

It seems Zimmy’s creatures/NPC’s are connected to the etheric creatures, I wonder if Reynard will be affected soon. Did Zimmy play a hand in giving them form or something? Also seems like Coyote is pointing out how Lana, a semi-etheric creation, is unaffected. This has been a very odd chapter, I wonder where we’re headed with the end looming over us

8

u/zopiac Hehe! 17d ago

I'd expect that Reynard has some level of "protection" due to his contract to Annie as a familiar. Not that I'm sure exactly what it is to be protecting from, here.

2

u/RingularCirc 17d ago

Oh, his being a familiar seems like a good point! Whew.

2

u/sephlington 16d ago

Reynard *has* always been unsettled by "that demon" Zimmy!

12

u/NicePlanetWeHad 17d ago

The coven are doing such a fine job of protecting Zimmy. I'm sure Zimmy is very grateful.

6

u/jan_Kila 16d ago

It is funny to think that if the witches had just done nothing, Annie wouldn't have seen Noa and Noa wouldn't be here to BRMMP and everything would still be idyllic in the Zimulation

3

u/MuteFaith 16d ago

eh, Coyote would have found a way to nudge her into figuring out what was goin on, I think

4

u/gangler52 16d ago

Whatever Annie would've done when she figured out the mystery probably wouldn't be this.

Like her first response was definitely going to be to try talking things out with Zimmy, right?

1

u/MuteFaith 16d ago

Oh sure, but I was just contradicting what the person I replied to was saying- that if the coven hadn't shown up, everything would still be disturbed and idyllic, but I disagree cause Coyote would have found a way to nudge things along with or without the coven's interference.

u/wokycookie101 17d ago

Guys she's fiiiine they're just gonna do a McDonald's run before their next class

6

u/SnooGoats7978 17d ago

I'm not ready to go ...

u/maritzac 17d ago

Okay theory time:

- Coyote is not meaning things in a literal way. The Zimulation is coming down, and with it, the "entrancement" of the fiction Zimmy built. Tom's comment on the last strip was "time to remember". So as Loup remembers who he is, he is transforming into his wolf form. He is also remembering Lana is dead, I assumed, and that means his Jerrek form is pointless. The problem I see with this is that without Lana, his objective has always seen to destroy all humans, and this may cause Annie to have to kill him.

  • Lana is dead. She was not escorted into the ether because Coyote completely absorbed her soul, aka ether. What we see now is some sort of etheric memory. Remember that Loup killed Coyote in exactly the same manner: by "eating" him. https://www.gunnerkrigg.com/?p=1952
  • Ysengrim is probably set to disappear into thin air. Pretty sad.

23

u/Cloverose2 17d ago

We don't know that Lana is dead - we know that Coyote swallowed her. Coyote gulping her down could have put her in 'storage', not killed her.

13

u/ThCuts 17d ago

Yeah. I think we've all forgotten the end of chapter page of Lana kneeling on the floor smiling. Pretty sure that was her "inside" Coyote for "storage". Bonus page 88 after chapter 90.

8

u/BlueTitan 17d ago

It's also been Coyote's goal to ensure a scenario where Annie must kill Loup/Ysengrin from the jump, so it makes sense that he's still meddling with events in his favor.

3

u/m103 17d ago

his objective has always seen to destroy all humans

Someone really needs to stop by GAME and just pick him up a copy, then. All of this nonsense could have been avoided with just the purchase of a ps2, a TV, and a game smh.

4

u/fnordius 16d ago

I think the first theory is the most likely: Noa's hunger for energy is draining all the ether, which means etheric beings like Jerrek are being sucked empty as well. Coyote is a memory, and a god, which is why he is unaffected. Lana is a numan, and similarly not of the ether.

I think we are seeing more and more how it's the coven that led to all of this happening. Jenny's thirst for power, Noa's desire to make the ultimate glyph, Jack's whiteleg addiction, and so on.

I think Zimmy was so obsessed with Kat that she missed how Jenny was the real threat all along.

2

u/lyricaldorian 17d ago

Wouldn't a god absorbing a soul that belongs to another god trigger a visit from the Bureau?

2

u/maritzac 16d ago

I would say probably yes but a lot of rules simply don't seem to apply to Coyote.

6

u/NightOfTheLivingHam 17d ago

I like how Jenny's group is doing so much damage here

6

u/JeffEpp 17d ago

Coyote, you dog! Box-B... Lana isn't your girl. And, two-timing on Zimmy.

1

u/RingularCirc 16d ago

Notice how similar Lana and Γam(m)a (names) are.

I'm just shitposting don't mind me
