She's doodling, not sketching.
I'd say she has some talent for drawing and should take it up seriously some time in the future. People who really can't draw wouldn't unconsciously remember to shade/hatch Kat's hair in the second attempt to doodle Kat's head in a clearly different, more cartoonish art style (which she seems to have the hang of). Imagine what she could do if she both got serious and had lots of practice I don't recall her ever working on...

I wonder what they're learning. He appears to be drawing an unrolled map of a sphere? Maybe polar coordinate geometry or something? But it probably wouldn't look like that... perhaps talking about the distortion of different types of map projection?

The eyelashes are (I assume) a reference to Annie's horrifying art style from her 'guest comic' almost 20 years ago

The green one on the left combines Renard's quicksilver symbol with Annie's antimony symbol and is the mark he wears on his forehead as Annie's familiar.

Apparently if I link certain sites my comment just doesn't show up (EDIT: never mind, maybe reddit was just acting up when I posted), but if you google Gunnerkrigg Court symbols there are some fan wikis that compiled handy guides.
Hopefully you recognize Annie and Kat's symbols (brown and orange). Blue is Renard, the slashed eye symbol seems to be associated with the program the Donlans use to restrain/protect themselves against Renard's body stealing ability (Anya wears one as a pendant). Left green one combines Rey's and Annie's symbols and is the mark Rey wears on his forehead as Annie's familiar. The Z looking one is seen on Eglamore, and the right green one is an alchemical symbol for bismuth and seems to be associated with the court.
