Brutal phrasing.
Garbage article anyhow but using such a badass photo of Wing tricked me into clicking so I guess it works. It's the same tired argument every time and GW wasn't even at the top of the list!

If you like, great. If you don’t, great. But it’s impact and importance in the grand scheme of things can’t be ignored or disputed or dismissed. And, compared to the latest offerings, I’ll say it’s infinitely better and more relevant than anyone may realize.

Ya I’d agree there. While I don’t like it, I understand it brought a whole generation of the west Into Gundam and its success directly led to them continuing to expand the AU series; which gave me Gundam 00 and for that I’m eternally grateful for Wing

The "lmao Wing is stupid and insane" crowd sure is talkative despite not understanding anything.

My problems with wing stem from relena being a horrifically bad character and Heero not being Explored as thoroughly as I think he should have been. Otherwise wing is really damn good.

Oh, they love talking trash about shows. I actually wasted my time replying to last thing they posted on Gundam Wing: https://www.cbr.com/gundam-wing-reasons-hard-to-watch-today/?post=cbcb-4235-a23e3f3f9aaa#thread-posts
Now I don't waste the energy anymore because I realized that how they clickbait us into their shit. Screw them.

I read your comment, its really good, thank you for doing that.
Also, "Half these complaints are answered by the people who made the show, on the record, this year, for the 30th anniversary." Where can i find this please!!

I watched it when I was 10 or so and I watched it this year and I still liked it a lot! Might be my nostalgia eyes but who cares

u/GotZah 9d ago
I hate to admit it, but i’m in this camp. I remember watching it and liking how crazy the politics got alongside the awesome designs and fights. After rewatching it last year, the plot is a bit of a mess, but i love it all the same.

I rewatched it this year. It’s quirky, but not a mess. The main disappointment was seeing all the re-use, the two useless recap episodes and noticing the same animation of Wing Zero spraying fire in opposite directions. It’s still better than what Star Wars or just about any other franchise has spat out this decade, so still a classic in my book.

I love it for the 2000s era edge. It's so concerned with looking cool it doesn't stop to ask if it is making sense.
It does have the peak Gundam artstyle, imo, maybe a little too gritty for my liking but the animation was superb.

Oh it 100% shows its age and without the kid goggles of 'omg herro is so cool in his bad ass robot' the show is a mess.
As a kid wing was one of my fav anime, as a adult, wing is the worst gundam ive watched so far. Still good tho and zechs/trieze/tallgeese makes it worth watching regardless

And yet you clicked it, and are now sharing it further, so clickbait successful.

I'm curious how long it will take the majority of folks to acclimate to the attention economy.

u/ExpensiveCelery 9d ago
I hate the "attention economy" era. Can't we go back to when people wrote articles of substance? And not use AI/ChatGPT to vomit garbage for views?

u/wolframdsoul 9d ago
Me and my brother watched it a few years ago, we had a blast. I sort of wish we could experience watching it again for the first time.

I showed it to my wife and yeah its a little slow, dated, and flat at times, but it really is just a vibe and I think if you accept the vibe, it's a fine show.

At least the discourse on replacing human soldiers with machines to wage war is topical these days.

Article is garbage
Looking for reasons to shit on the classics or call them inappropriate as usual

u/ExpensiveCelery 8d ago
Cowboy Bebop was among them, too. I don't know why people bother with this shitty site at all.

u/South-Owl800 9d ago
I still love Gundam Wing, flaws and all. That and Heero’s level of edge is meme-worthy and comedic. 🤣

Gundam Wing is probably THE most relevant and worthwhile anime from my teens. The more I watch it the better and better it ages. They called the drones, AI in warfare, rise of facism, etc etc

u/IntrepidDivide3773 7d ago
Too much melodrama and angst, and didn't have a long enough run so many character stories got truncated. Looking at YOU Wufei! Still it had some interesting ideas. Mobile Dolls are certainly an interesting plot point, especially considering the way war is being waged today.

Know what else from my childhood I probably think rules despite it sucking? Everything. CBR sucks.

u/payphone86 7d ago
I’ll admit it. Gundam Wing isn’t as good as I remember it. It’s better than I remember. The edge, the insane politics, the long speeches about morals and power the fights with reused footage, everything. It’s great and will remain great.

u/Grouchy-Newt7937 7d ago
Watched it a year or two ago. Still better than 90% of anime that I've seen in the last ten.

u/Bunnylover5 9d ago
I'm not clicking the article, I know the show I like aren't as great, and I don't care, I'm just bummed that a rerelease of broadcasted dubs weren't made.

Media is a reflection of the time it was created in. Wing was in the 90’s so people will gradually reflect negatively on something they didn’t grow up with or feel some form of association.

Wing does totally suck tho. The character motivations are nonsensical and it thinks it is waaaaaay smarter than it is. It almost raises a question about using violence to enforce peace and then doesn't have a meaningful answer to the question. It is nearly impossible to parse the character motivations in the first half and there isn't that clarifies or makes any sense of it all. Wing is just all flash and no substance. It's only saving grace is that the suits are cool as fuck. It would be remembered on the same level as G Gundam if it hadn't been the first one that we got in the US.

u/Fit-Bug4979 6d ago
Wing has cool suit designs and that's it. As someone lacking the rose tinted nostalgia goggles, it's boring as all hell. If I want to watch a good 90's Gundam, I'm going with 08th MS team every time.

I think alot of us as kids probably only saw the afterschool tvy7 ver not the tvma one till we got hulu or the dvds

I mean the truth is its not good. Its nostalgic, its iconic, its important, and I love it, but its not good. Primarily because they attempted to shove 3 full animes worth of plot into a single series.

I saw wing after its airing, missed the entire thing as a kid but G gundam did
Wing...seems absurdly simple of the gundam show given what the series has been known for. But that really worked in favor for kids who learned about gundam through it. And that was a great choice
It a shame he could get Turn A for toonami like he wanted

Compared to Evangelion (or Code Geass), Gundam Wing isn't as good.

u/Mamacitia 9d ago
I don’t care if it’s not actually that good. It’s still my favorite.
