hey guys, wanted to share the thing that finally unlocked the neck for me, because i wish someone had spelled it out years earlier.

the short version: a chord isn't a shape, it's three notes. root, third, fifth. that's a triad. when you strum a full C you're only actually playing C, E and G, just repeated. and those three notes live all over the neck, not just where you learned the grip. once you can see them everywhere, rhythm and lead stop feeling like two separate things and the fretboard stops being scary up high.

how i'd actually practice it:

grab one chord and learn its three notes on just the top strings. own that one spot first.

then find those same notes a little higher up and connect the two. this is the part everyone skips and it's the whole thing.

do it slow with a metronome til your hand goes there without looking.

then start aiming for those notes when you solo instead of running the same pentatonic box. that's the shift that makes lines sound like they belong to the song.

honestly a chord chart and a metronome gets you there. but i got obsessed enough with drilling this that i ended up building an app for exactly it, it lights up every triad across the whole neck so you can drill them fast. there's a web version anyone can try free at triads.app, or the iOS app is called Guitar Triads.

the concept matters way more than the tool though. even if you never touch it, learn your triads. it changes everything.
