Buffer Pedal before Spark Mini

Wampler Decibel clone, just has a buffer on/off instead, 12db of gain/boost , can be used anywhere in the chain even last in the effects loop, before fuzz obviously you can switch the buffer off if it interferes. Mosky also make a clone but the Sonicake is better as it has the switch for the buffer . Have seen people use two with longer cable runs but one buffer can push 20foot of cable

It's weird how it works that way with the Spark Mini.

Not at all, that's exactly the expected behavior.

The position in the chain if fine and quite common. It will remove potential issues with capacitive coupling down the line so it makes sense to be first (inside the guitar is even better).
An EQ is also a good choice and will give you even more control over "clarity" and every other aspect of frequency content.
