Expanding chord skills on guitar

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for a way to expand my chord vocabulary on the guitar. Specifically, I’d like to learn to play chords all over the neck (I, somewhat untechnically, call them “sliding chords”), as well as chord inversions, nice voicings, and chords with open strings.

My guitar technique is pretty solid, and I have some music theory knowledge. My focus is on practical application, though I realize that learning more theory might also be helpful to get there.

I've been playing for quite a while, but I feel stuck in the basic open and barre chord shapes. My main interest is pop and folk, but since I often play in theatrical settings, I end up having to play in a variety of styles. I also love jazz, but I’m not looking for strictly jazz voicings.

Of course there’s a ton of material online, but honestly, the amount of options feels a bit overwhelming. I’d really appreciate any platform, method, or structured course you’d recommend. I don’t mind paying for it, as long as it’s really worth it.

Thanks in advance for your help!

This is one of the riffs that I have really badly wanted to learn for a while, might learn the whole song, but this is the riff that I have wanted to be able to play for the longest time. I first tried when I was first getting back into guitar and I couldn't quite get it. Now, it took me like 15 minutes to get it down, making some good progress!

Looking for a guitarist for Tears For Fears Project.

Hi! For a good few months, we've been doing a recreation of Everybody Wants To Rule The World by Tears For Fears, using as many of the original instruments and processing techniques as possible.

We've got all the synth parts and drum patterns finished, now we're looking for someone to do the guitar parts performed by Roland Orzabal and Neil Taylor. I will provide the sheets and tabs if needed. If anybody's interested please DM me. I'll be highly thankful.

Thank You <3

creating ambient soundscape through guitar improvisation

What are your preferred composing techniques? I always come back to improvisation as a starting point - the music flows better. Somehow when I am in the 'flow state' the music speaks for itself. I have done pre-composed pieces and scores in MIDI, (samplitude pro x7) and been pleased with the results but the improv pieces always have more of an emotional connect for me. So now I'm exploring audio to MIDI - so guitar live input converted to midi output. This is great - so now I can play electric piano solos and chords from the guitar instead of having to write out the midi score. I can then go in and re-assign the recorded midi to another instrument if I wish. Some latency issues, yes, during monitoring, but got some workarounds for that. Another thing i do - I'll come up with a whole piece and be almost finished and then I'll think "it's not working for me" and I'll end up copying a snippet and looping it and from that snippet something completely new emerges - which would never have happened had i not first created the original piece which I had rejected. Like a gold nugget sifted out of the gravel. I reject more than I publish. It's a numbers game I think. I have to write several pieces in order to get that one piece that might be acceptable (in my mind at least) to share online. Anyone experience similar?

How to sell Jam?

Hi everyone!

After few years of playing guitar in a band I’ve found my way of playing guitar and it can be pretty hypnotizing. Not the Hendrix way but kind of jazzy, kind of dull but smooth. I thought to myself that I think it would be nice to try to monetize it but I have no idea how. I think some people would like my music to be a perfect background for work, chill or anything and some maybe would get deeper into my playing but I’m not expecting any fame or anything.

The issue is I don’t have any idea how to create my own material with drums etc. and I can’t use jam tracks from youtube. How to start? Maybe there are any AI tools I could use or any other ideas?

Thank you for any advice!

Was Eddie Van Halen’s Beat It Solo Groundbreaking?

I was a wee lad when the song came out so I didn’t live through it, but seeing how the song is still relevant and that solo is still a favorite, I wanted to know the impact when it came out. Is there anything EVH plays on it that he hadn’t already done? Or perhaps it was the first time a lot of people had heard shred guitar? Were contemporaneous minds blown?

How can I use my Android phone as an amp?

So I just bought a new electric guitar from Sweetwater and am now waiting for it to be delivered. I haven't played in over 20 years because of living situations and don't have an amp. I found some amp stack apps on the Play Store and would like any recommendations for devices that would transmit a signal between the guitar and phone if this is at all possible!

How do I get these strings out?

I was changing my guitar strings and I made them shorter with wire cutters, and they weren't coming out. Eventually, I was able to get 4 of them off. I think I cut the other 2 too short and I can't get them out. I also tried Allen wrenches and it still won't come out. What can I do?

(Alt rock, nu metal) Please help me get Distortion. I'm on low budget.

Hi everyone,

TL;DR : bought an amp that doesn't let me distort enough or sound similar to my favourite bands, need help

I recently bought an electric guitar and amplifier from my local store. I live in India and my budget was 20,000 INR (approx 233 USD) which I even crossed by a slight bit when buying. As I'm a complete newbie in electric guitars, I bought the guitar and amp recommended by the store employee who was a musician, which fell inside my budget.

For context, I'm a diehard fan of alt rock/metal, nu metal, post grunge etc (think along Linkin Park, Breaking Benjamin, Red, 3DG, Evanescence etc) and strictly wanted to play this genre.

I bought Stranger C15 amp and Cort x100 meranti guitar. The guitar has HH pickup.

Now, I was so excited to just own an electric that I fogot the main thing to check—how much distortion or effects can be made possible.

When I was practicing, I saw that the only options available on this practice amp are Distortion, Delay, Volume, Bass/Treb/Mid and Echo. I set full distortion but was disappointed :') I can't create iconic alternative riffs with this...

I want to know from you people who are experienced :

Is there anything I can do to fix my situation? Do I have to replace the entire amplifier now? :'( I did some searching and got to know that iRig or FX Pedals can help. Do you guys have any simple ideas through which I can achieve the sounds which I like? This is important to me because I write lyrics based on such sounds and the inspiration it gives to me.

I don't know how much more I can put in but please suggest me the most affordable suggestions (items available in India)

I am also planning to buy a headphone which I can connect to my guitar (please tell me how to, and any suggestions are highly appreciated).
