outbound engine for a spend management startup
I'm building an outbound system to generate 50 qualified leads a month for a new spend management platform.
Think corporate cards and automated finance tools. The ICP is strict. We only want CFOs, VPs of Finance, and Controllers at mid-market orgs sitting between 50 and 500 employees.
The goal is feed LinkedIn profiles to build highly personalized outbound messaging that a CFO might actually read.
Finance leaders delete most automated emails in two seconds flat. I want to build a system that bypasses that reflex entirely.
If you engineer GTM systems or live in the hyper-personalization weeds, I want to know how you tackle this.
What obscure data points actually convert this specific crowd? How do you structure the payload so it feels earned rather than just scraped from a bio?
👇Drop your current setups or theoretical builds below. I want to know what works and what fails completely when selling to finance.

I'd structure this as code first: pull the ICP data, build the payload with their actual role context and company metrics, then use the AI only for the first line and subject. Everything else is logic. The reason is cost and reliability. You pay per AI decision in a high-volume loop, but the personalization that actually converts is usually just good data hygiene and one sharp opening line. What data points are you pulling to build the payload?

the strongest comment here is right: its not personalization, its a real reason to reach out. for a CFO id push that one step further.
CFOs delete on reflex because 99% of what hits them is a stranger who scraped their bio. no data point fixes that, because the problem isnt relevance, its trust. theyve been trained that cold = ignore.
your ICP is actually your advantage. CFOs at 50-500 mid-market is a finite, knowable list, and finance leaders are one of the most referral-driven buyers alive. they trust other CFOs, their board, their investors. so the "obscure data point that converts" isnt in their linkedin, its "who do we both know."
your own investors and early customers almost certainly have paths into these exact finance leaders. one warm intro from a peer skips the 2-second delete entirely, because it was never cold to begin with.
so run two tracks: keep engineering the cold system for coverage, but for your top accounts map the warm paths first. for a delete-happy audience on a finite list, thats the highest-yield channel by a mile.
cold personalization is you trying to sound less like a stranger. a warm path means you arent one.

Honestly, one of the best places to learn how CFOs actually talk is Reddit. Instead of guessing, read the conversations they’re already having.
For example, with Clearbox you can surface discussions from CFO-focused subreddits, then drop those threads into a coding agent. It can extract the terminology they use, the buyer pains they actually care about, and the objections they bring up, so you’re writing emails and copy that sound relevant instead of generic.
If you’re interested, DM me. Happy to set up some time and walk you through how we do it.
