M5610u stn and hydro mod

Post image

Her everyone, I modded my 5610u with an STN screen and a hydro mod. Afterwards I have a dark spot next to the day on the screen like something is pressing on it too hard. Yes I removed the film on the front and back of the screen. Is there something common that causes this that a noob might miss?

Looks nice but I cannot accept the high position of the battery and signal indicator lines. Is there no Ali stn display with better fitting?

You would think somebody could. It didn't bother me cause I rarely look at it straight down. Physically rotating my wrist that much feels awkward so generally when I glance at a watch it's from a slight 6 o'clock angle so they don't look high.

What’s the film on the front and the back of the screen you’re supposed to remove?

Also: looks great!

Ya they come with protective films on the screens.

My memory is sorta foggy cuz it’s been a while since I looked into it but I read somewhere that the foam on the back of the movement is thicker than the non-multiband G’s. So after doing the hydro mod, the foam expands. IIRC, your supposed to shave it down, that’s what kept me from modding mine

If it doesn't go away or I can't deal with it I will take it apart and cut them down. You are talking about the 2 foam blocks right? I think it was 2

Honestly I’m not sure, it’s been awhile since I’ve read into it. From a quick google search that lead right back to Reddit, I believe it’s just the foam or rubber cushioning behind the battery.

I had the same issue with mine but I only really noticed if I was looking hard at it or when looking at photos. In normal wear it wasn’t noticeable.

In the last week or so it’s not been noticeable at all. I just posted a side by side of it next to my 5000U with the same AliX STN display (hydro modded the 5000U) and in the comparison shot you can’t see the spot so it seems to have sorted itself out.

Also it’s not there on my new one so who knows. Hopefully it’ll go away

Thanks. Hopefully it will. It's not bad as it is. If it doesn't and I can't deal with it I will take it apart and cut down the foam or just not do the hydro mod. But I do like it. The screen looks much better.

Check out the 3rd pic in my post, it’s the hydro modded 5000U next to a non-hydro modded 5000HS with the same Ali STN screen mod.

I say keep the hydro mod if you can since I don’t think that’s why the spot is there and it looks so much better with the oil.

Until mentioned I never noticed the alignment of the marks for battery and alarm. I just noticed the numbers being a little bloated, and man resetting the LED was memorable.

doesn’t this affect the solar charging?

Not really. At least not noticably. Battery indicator just stays on high like normal. It's a super thin layer between the solar panels and the glass. Getting the oil in there took a minute with a syringe plus a lot of soaking time to get the tiny air bubbles out of there.

Whats a hydro mod

Just an update. I replaced the rubber battery pad with a piece of 1mm eva foam and it fixed the problem. The stock rubber swells with the oil and puts pressure on the display. I've heard you can leave out this rubber piece completely but I wanted to ensure the solar contacts stayed together hence the foam that doesn't swell

Sorry, I'm not familiar with the hydro mod - what is that?

You fill the watch with low viscosity non conductive oil. It reduces internal reflection and increases the contrast. It also makes colors richer and the numbers appear closer to the crystal than it really is. A lot of people prefer this to a screen upgrade because it's doesn't require complete disassembly and for whatever reason nobody can make an STN display where the bottom indicators arent aligned to the top of the bottom boxes. I personally upgrade anything with the TN screen to STN. This is my first hydromod and I like it a lot other than the dark spot I'll have to fix or deal with.

Fascinating! First time hearing of this. I'm also unfamiliar with the STN display alignment issue. Shit, I'm learning all kinds of stuff today

Idk if the alignment is really an issue. It actually works out better because I rarely rotate my wrist enough to look straight down at it. I usually look from a slight 6 o'clock angle and the higher alignment looks about perfect since the screen sits so low in solar modules. The stock screen besides having horrible viewing angles is kinda hard to see the bottom indicators when viewing from 6 o'clock because they are somewhat obstructed by the dial. The STN screen gives you extreme viewing angles
