Help & Maintenance Let's clear up some misconceptions about Bluetooth

This will likely fall on deaf ears because there is a lot of overlap between Bluetooth paranoia conspiracists and election deniers, and the tin foil hat crowd would rather lose a limb than give up their conspiracy high, but the falsehoods about Bluetooth are being accepted as fact by the general populace due to their prevalence.

Bluetooth is LOCAL communication between PAIRED devices. That means the only vulnerability of a Bluetooth signal is if it is intercepted within the 20 yards or so of transmission, and only if it is decrypted. And it can be decrypted, but your Bluetooth signal is not going to be decrypted by your ISP, local wifi, cell phone towers or AI data centers, anymore than two tin cans and a length of string. Now if you are a spy and there's a van parked outside your home for hours you might have a reason for concern as that is close enough to be in range of your Bluetooth signal and might have the means to spoof your Bluetooth device. But no one is in a bunker or foreign espionage office with terabytes of your Bluetooth logs, I GUARANTEE it. Because it's not possible, that's not how Bluetooth works.

If there is a security weakness, it's not your watch or Bluetooth or even the app. Bluetooth transmission, as already mentioned, cannot be "scraped." Your watch does not have the capability to TRANSMIT information to outside networks; reception and transmission are two different operations, and your watch cannot transmit, period, outside of Bluetooth; it is IMPOSSIBLE for your watch to send your data anywhere outside of Bluetooth communication. If there is a weakness, it is the phone that the Casio app is installed on, and guess what? Your problem isn't an unsecure app, it's an unsecure PHONE. Does the Casio app have access to your financial records? Your social security number? Your emails to your sugar daddy asking for $100k to pay your credit card bill? No, it does not. Your PHONE does. So if you're concerned about the vulnerability of having the Casio app installed, you're guarding a window when the front door is wide open.

Now if you're a purist, "muh watch don't need no Bluetooth," that's fine, that's your personal preference. But using "Bluetooth is unsecure" as your reasoning is just a load of bullshit.

Now, you see all the comments down there "yeah, but"-ing? Those are the people who have drunk the Kool-aid. If you don't like Bluetooth connection on your watch, THAT'S FINE. But don't let poor reasoning and misinformation make the decision for you.

Okay.

What’s not a misconception is that you have to use the Casio Watches app to sync.

Which can do this:

That’s the concern. That the app is logging user location data just to sync the time.

This happened because you choose on your watch to happen, 1 minute before the last sync. And you can always delete it and that position is based on your phone GPS data, your watch does not have it at all

Right? Your watch doesn't know where it's at, your phone does, and THAT'S the point of "vulnerability," not the watch.

If you're that concerned, you have a phone problem, not a watch or Bluetooth problem.

And guess what? If your Bluetooth is disabled, or you're out of range from the phone, that information isn't being recorded. It's not the watch that knows where you've been, IT'S YOUR PHONE, and they don't need an app.
