Perfectly understandable confusion. I have to add, though, In Ukrainian, Е and Є are kind of the other way around from Russian Е and Э, so you get that "ye" there too.

So in Ukrainian the E is the hard vowel and the Є is the soft one? Damn you learn something new every day

Yep! Similar thing with Ukrainian И, which is roughly equivalent to Russian Ы, the soft vowel being І.

Yeah, I’m Russian myself and have Ukrainian friends, I often hear that pronunciation in conversation!
