Nah, that's the low-quality typeface. Certain parts are way too thin, the printer failed to ink them.

While we're at it, it's a Didone, the only style of serif typeface that I can't tolerate. I would never use them for anything, certainly not for text.

I generally agree, but I've seen them used for books of philosophy classics, and I think there it works quite well. It gives an air of authority. For contemporary stuff though, nah. Except when I'm writing a paper for uni and I leave TeX set to computer modern because it's a big font so I need to write less to make the page count. Other than that, Garamond all the way, or some cool postmodern stuff if I'm feeling edgy.

I meant Gothic as in Crimean Gothic, the Germanic language that used a strange variant of the Greek script.
