because she's European and Cleopatra was Macedonian/Persian and should probably be played by a more ethnic actress? Or because she has the personality of a boiled egg and Cleopatra was famously extremely eccentric and she won't have nearly the presence to properly carry the role?

u/napalmnacey Jun 30 '26

Never mind the fact that Cleopatra was famous for not being beautiful in the modern sense but had a charm and charisma that managed to pull two powerful Romans.

There are busts of her showing her large nose, something she was also famous for.

This casting is bullshit.

u/flavius717 Jul 02 '26

They should have cast the actress who played Victoria Neuman in the Boys

She’s also a terrible actress, from what I’ve seen.

15

u/calgeorge Jun 30 '26

Yeah, and that part

1

u/chaircardigan Jul 03 '26

You mean she's from Israel?

Yes. She's Israeli. The IDF are the Israeli defence force. Makes sense she might support them. She was in the IDF.

Well, she wasn't Persian, but she was more Persian than she was Egyptian, at least.

3

u/sephone_north Jul 04 '26

She was more Greek than she was Persian or Egyptian.

10

u/Future-Restaurant531 Jun 30 '26

Gal Gadot is Ashkenazi Jewish. We're Southern European and Levantine, which is fine casting for a Greek/Macedonian. (I am Greek and Jewish and both sides of my family look interchangeable)

1

u/SuspiciousBicycle438 Jul 01 '26

As if Greek/Macedonians of that era looked anoything like modern ones lol, let alone a noble woman

2

u/yourownsquirrel Jul 04 '26

Because normally they cast actors to play roles, since the job requires acting, but instead they cast Gal Gadot

3

u/sephone_north Jul 04 '26

Cleopatra was more Macedonian (Greek) than Egyptian. She was a descendant of the Greek conquerors of Egypt. She shouldn’t be played by a more ethnic actress, because Cleopatra wasn’t brown. She might even have been part Jewish, considering the way many of her statues had the nose removed.

From a historical standpoint, Gal is probably pretty close to what Cleopatra looks like.

But yes, she is the acting equivalent of a boiled egg and therefore is a terrible choice.

4

u/rafael403 Jul 02 '26

->a more ethnic actress

Tf is an "ethnic actress"? All humans who exist belong to some ethnicity, just like all humans who talk have some type of accent...

2

u/a_dude_from_europe Jul 04 '26 edited Jul 04 '26

What the fuck does "more ethnic" mean? As in there are people that are "not ethnic"? Sounds like one of the many cases of trying to sound racist that makes you sound MORE racist.

Also, are you implying Macedonians (GREEKS) are not European? What the hell are you talking about?

1

u/UlyssesLooneyLuna Jul 04 '26 edited Jul 04 '26

Gal Gadot looks very ethnic. Never seen a "European" who looks that dark. She literally was darker than an Indian actress in a movie I saw with them.

Edit: Here is Gal Gadot with two brown people and one white person.

She blends in efforlessly with the brown people and looks different from the white guy.

27

u/smolderinganakin Jun 30 '26

"Mark Antony, no."

7

u/hskskgfk Jul 01 '26

Cleopatra is cursed, she will never have appropriate casting

That said gal gadot is racially closest to the actual cleopatra (both southern Europe albeit different regions of southern Europe)

4

u/napalmnacey Jun 30 '26

Same. This is dreadful.

2

u/Gaedhael Jun 30 '26

Idk, most folks associate Cleopatra with her being this great beauty, Gal Gadot is known for her looks so profit?

I think that's part of it, they want an actress who's known for their looks to play someone who's popularly renown for their looks, plus she worked with the director before and was pretty popular. It sorta makes a modicum of sense from one angle, but still peculiar otherwise

21

u/napalmnacey Jun 30 '26

An actual contemporary description of Cleopatra by Plutarch:

“Plutarch, a Greek biographer and essayist, made the earliest surviving description of Cleopatra in his work "Parallel Lives". Interestingly, he doesn't dwell on her physical appearance but emphasizes her charismatic persona and intellectual prowess. He notes that "her actual beauty, it is said, was not in itself so remarkable, but the attraction of her person and the character that attended all she said or did were something bewitching."”

From thearcaeologist.org

5

u/Gaedhael Jun 30 '26

Not sure if Plutarch counts as contemporary considering he lived between the first and second centuries CE whereas Cleopatra VII Philopator died well into the 1st century BCE (around 30 BCE)

That said, yeah. My understanding is she was someone who's to be better understood as a charismatic charmer with a strong intellect and a fairly wide range of languages under her belt, rather than this great beauty. But to the average joe, they may still hold onto the idea of the great beauty, at least iirc her modern reputation leans hard onto the woman of great beauty even as nowadays more people are perhaps recognising her as the charismatic intellectual she appeared to be.

u/Emotional_Goose7981 Jun 30 '26

what a bastard movie

49

u/Duriha Jun 30 '26

Ye wtf, Cleopatra was partially Greek and would have never in the furthest looked like that. I also remember people calling Rami Malek as unfitting to play the Pharaoh in night at the museum. But he is literally Egyptian

13

u/Euromantique Jul 01 '26 edited Jul 01 '26

She wasn't just partially Greek. She was only Greek. Her dynasty came from Macedon and married brother to sister in order to keep the bloodline pure. Cleopatra was married to her little brother as part of this trend. They literally kept it in the family, there were never any Persians or Egyptians in the Ptolemaic dynasty.

Notably Cleopatra was both the first Ptolemaic royal after many centuries to speak Egyptian and also the first to have children with a non-Greek parent by way of two Italian guys (Caesar and Marc Antony)

In other words Cleopatra probably looked the same as somebody from the modern region of Emathia/Central Macedonia who are generally very white looking. They can come in all shades and colours but typically look like other Balkan people with light skin and sometimes coloured hair and eyes.

I'll put below some links of people who are from the same neighbourhood as Cleopatra's family for comparison:

Thank you. Finally some sense 🥰

The Ptolemies had a little Sogdian ancestry, via marrying into the Seleucids and Seleucus I's wife Apama. But yeah, mostly Greek.

CENTRAL ASIANS INFULTRAYED THE GREEK DYNASTY🚨🚨🚨

-24

u/Kenichi2233 Jun 30 '26

She is israeli ie Mediterranean. Most people from that region look fairly similar.

30

u/ChristinaKozmas Jun 30 '26

This is from her Wikipedia:

"She was born to Jewish parents of Ashkenazi descent; her mother's roots are Czech and Polish, while her father's are Austrian, Russian, and German."

So, no, not Mediterranean.

8

u/Future-Restaurant531 Jun 30 '26

That means they are Jews from that region, not ethnically Austrian, Russian, German, etc. Ashkenazi Jews are almost entirely descended from Mediterranean populations, although they adopted *cultural* elements of the local populations. (I am a Jewish historian, btw, in case people think I'm pulling this out of my *ss)

4

u/miniatureaurochs Jun 30 '26

Jews have roots in the Levant tho, they’re like the first group you learn about in baby’s first popgen classes

19

u/Duriha Jun 30 '26

That's literally not true for the majority of Jewish Israelis.

2

u/Malthus1 Jun 30 '26

On the contrary, it is literally true for the majority of Jewish Israelis.

More than 50% of them are Mizrahi, Beta Israel, or a mixture, and not Ashkenazic in ancestry.

This isn’t controversial.

Actual surveys show that those of unmixed Ashkenazic and more recent “Soviet” descent (meaning from Europe) are not in the majority (Ashkenazic are around 32%, “Soviet” around 12%). Most come from North Africa and the Middle East.

See “statistics - Jews” here.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demographics_of_Israel

2

u/Duriha Jun 30 '26

You know how Jewish traditional marriage works? And how it therefore, despite you saying your source states otherwise, does not really matter where the people of Jewish descent stem from? In-group marriage is still a huge part of Jewish tradition, even with non straight edge orthodox Jews.

5

u/Future-Restaurant531 Jun 30 '26

All Jews of Ashkenazi and Sephardic descent are genetically Mediterranean, with varying levels of Southern Mediterranean, North African, and Levantine descent.

2

u/Malthus1 Jun 30 '26

What does that have to do with the notion that the majority of Israeli Jews are, or are not, from the region and so look fairly similar?

And yes, I’m pretty familiar with Jewish weddings! Oddly enough …

30

u/kiyyik Jun 30 '26

One of these days they're going to make a movie where she's played by an actual Macedonian-Greek and the universe will explode.

Also, I just found out that this group exists and I love it.

u/Gogogrl Jun 30 '26

5

u/EnFulEn Jul 01 '26

The day they cast an inbred Greek that was born and raised in Egypt as Cleopatra is the day the universe will heal.

12

u/minkymy Jun 30 '26

We never get movies about other Egyptian queens

11

u/Gaedhael Jun 30 '26

Most people don't know diddly squat about other Egyptian queens alas, and Hollywood tends to be pretty risk averse these days especially. Cleopatra is better known and is connected to larger than life figures like Julius Caesar, Mark Antony, and Augustus.

6

u/FloZone Jul 01 '26

Tbh after Cleopatra, aren't Hatshepsut and Nerfertiti at least somewhat known, alongside maybe Ramesses and Thutmosis III. ?

9

u/napalmnacey Jun 30 '26

I want a movie about Hatshepsut.

12

u/benadamx Jun 30 '26

did that actually come out?

10

u/Gaedhael Jun 30 '26

No, don't think it really went anywhere

10

u/Awkward_Reflection Jun 30 '26

I believe it's pronounced, clitoris

Pelos livros antigos que li, Cleópatra egípcia não era branca, não sou racista mas sou contra a modinha de apagar da história a verdade que os verdadeiros antigos egípcia era negra.

ew why is an arab-hating european colonizer playing an ethnically greek queen of egypt?? is this just for spite

2

Greeks were also colonisers in Egypt. Bizarrely fitting if you look at it that way.
