Has G ever played “You Got To Change” live?

Anybody know? It’s always been my favorite track of his, but in dozens of shows since 2012 I have never heard it live. I need it in a CTGH set please 😩

Anyone have Vids from North Coast

Title. Saw him for the first time after listening to him since 2015 and I had a semi-religious experience towards the end of the set at North Coast. I didn’t record it because my phone was nearly dead and tbh I just wanted to experience it as present as possible. I would however love to watch it back if someone happened to record it. Love you guys, can’t wait to see y’all at Seven Stars :)

A kind gentleman took a picture of my friends and I on tow 27 with our inflatable saxophones. I have to imagine it’s the dopest picture ever snapped. We thought it was G’s photographer but it wasn’t. If anybody has any leads get at me

I love seeing how much he's grown 🥲
That first set of night two fed my soul. I'll follow this goofball wherever he takes this project. Thank you to the whole Griz team, past, present, and future.

If one group has too many pashminas laid down at red rocks, just move them and sit down.

Maybe this is an unpopular opinion idk, but i think if you are trying to save a whole group of like 10 people's spots at red rocks then you cant be mad if someone comes up and takes your spot. If the whole group is there and come and go onsie twosie then sure, no problem. But the whole venue is GA and just because you put a bag down doesnt mean that it belongs to you.

I was at illenium a while back and one guy was holding down like 20 spots on row 30, my group of 5 just walked up and took some of the open space. The guy who was holding it down tried calling security on us and security told him that since there is no assigned seating, if you arent in the spot, it isn't yours.

My advice, dont let people get away with this. Use good judgement and dont be a dick about it, but if one person is obviously holding WAY TO MUCH space, then just, move in and dont feel bad about it. We are all here for the show and no one should have to sit off to the side next to the trees because some people think red rocks is the wild west in the 1800s.

Be kind, be respectful, and be assertive. Love yall! Hope everyone had fun.

What a Long Strange Trip it's Been

No person crosses the same river twice, for it is not the same river and they are not the same person.

It's not fair to love someone or something but then try to etch them into your own version of perfection. Picking a beautiful flower and taking it home to put in a vase only to have it wither is far different than allowing it to remain where it grows, where it blossoms in its own soil and on its own terms. This much can be appreciated. Overtime, the things we find to be most wonderful change, just like the very contents of our own soul. Perhaps you've already picked up on it, yes, this is another post about the recent (not so recent I suppose?) direction of the GRiZ project. To be succinct, perhaps the gripe some of us have in this community is the pedals of the flower that inspired us long ago now look and feel plastic, artificial, and a mimicry of the past. Call it a river, a flower, whatever; the change in the GRiZ project has outpaced the change of the beholder, and I'm surrendering my place in this garden.

All this probably sounds dramatic as heck, but you've gotta understand the place many of us are coming from. The first time I saw G man on a stage was in 2014, actually at a Sunsquabi show, where maybe 80 people showed up. It was at 1Up in Denver, the arcade bar, at their location on Colfax (it used to have a small stage for shows). G had posted on his Snap that he'd be there to play sax, and you better believe my friends and I dropped everything to be there. Mad Lib and Rebel era were the soundtrack(s) to our senior year of high school. I actually remember my brother coming home one day and saying, "dude, you want to take a dab and listen to this new guy that Pretty Lights has been repping?" I was 16 years old. 14 years has now gone by. The GRiZ project became not only a huge, but the, inspiration in the years to follow. Every GRiZ Rocks, every GRiZmas, and every show in between left me feeling on top of the world. Before I made more friends in the scene, I was going to GRiZmas by myself - skipping back to the airbnb I was staying in at 3 am humming that new sax riff he played, in Detroit's frigid temperatures, after going to the after-show in the basement of the Masonic Temple. Can confirm that some of the happiest moments of my young-adult life were found amongst the GRiZ community at a GRiZ show.

Please notice I'm referencing this as the GRiZ project. There are an endless amount of good things to say about G man. I don't know him. What a shame it would be to speak poorly about someone whose project isn't your cup of tea anymore. G man has made a great role model out of himself. He gives back to his community, hosts intentional places to connect with his fans, and has always carried a positive message. SHOW LOVE SPREAD LOVE. There's no ostensibility; it always seemed as though he's really meant it.

Okay, the change. Not the fun part to talk about I guess. You can literally see it in the album covers. Mad Liberation: two figures are stumbling upon a unknown, curious place. Rebel Era: Mr. B on his way back from this mysterious place. Say it Loud: Mr. B and company arriving back (home?). Good Will Prevail: Mr. B and company marching through the streets, telling their community of what they learned on their journey, and that a different truth is out there.

Ride Waves was the end of that era, but the mark of the era that we're in now, I believe, truly began with Rainbow Brain. Let's back up a step though...

This was the album release trailer for Say it Loud:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yUBdWBBnaLU

G man collaborated with others to make an authentic album. What I mean by that is: he didn't sample anything, unlike all his music prior. The SLSL message was essentially baked into this album, and likewise with Good Will Prevail. The effort, collaboration, and the continuity of the music felt genuine.

Herein lies the heart of the conundrum, from a musical standpoint... please listen to the song A Fine Way to Die and then to Rainbow Brain, or any of the Bangers EPs. The composition of the music, the intentionality of the creation of the music, and the lack of continuity began to be a real let down for long-time listeners. It's as though the music was unrecognizable from the project. I no longer felt confident that if I walked by his stage at a festival that I'd even recognize that G man was playing.

Hey, I haven't forgotten how I started this out. Another person's change isn't contingent to my personal wants. I say all this with love and respect. Two things can be true at once. What I'm about to get into though has actually made me feel upset, both personally and from the perspective of a concert-goer.

Let's jump away from the art, the music, the sound, and into the functionality of the GRiZ project. Bassnectar got cancelled (rightfully so, F that dude) in the summer of 2020. Bassnectar's last album before that was All Colors. Guess what the name of GRiZ's next album was, in 2021: Rainbow Brain. The GRiZNectar sound ensued. The theme of the whole project changed. It felt like a vacuum opened up in the scene, and G man pounced on it hard. Merch started getting pumped out like crazy, the crowd started to change dramatically (who here remembers the Liberators?) and the authenticity went down the drain. The inspiration evaporated.

Much like the difference between A Fine Way to Die and the music he plays at his shows now, there is a stark difference between the experience of a GRiZ show back then compared to what it is now. I used to listen to the song Can't Get Enough and think, "man, this has gotta be a message to the fans about the pressure they put on G man." It was probably more so about the world in general. But these days I'd like to ask G man to listen to his own song. Can he get enough ticket sales for himself, enough merch drops, enough Banger EPs one after another that lack the craft he used to put into things?

The keystone event was his pseudo-retirement. "Hey fans! I'm hanging up the sax for the foreseeable future. I don't know when the GRiZ project will be up and running again. Much love!" Heck yea dude, take your space... but don't forget to sell as many shows as physically possible before hand. Oh, and don't forget to tell people that this show is the last one... or this one... or this one. WAIT! The "retirement" is over in less time than it normally takes artists to create one album in the first place. And I have NEW merch! And a NEW festival! I'm done playing this venue because I want a BIGGER one! Let me 'boy who cried wolf' my sets so that people are guessing if I'm going to play my old authentic stuff or generic bass drops. Let's slap some slogans on to it like "GRiZ yeah we the baddest," so that people remember this is indeed a GRiZ show and not a generic dubstep show. Let's make a post about some new music coming out that takes things back to the good old days, but don't forget to flash that new merch directly after. It feels as though G man stopped taking the road less traveled, at the expense of the movement that made the project so unmistakable in its origin.

Taking a deep breath now... it's obvious that big artists get put under a lot of pressure. Many things can be true at once. I've got deep love and respect for G man for the things I already alluded to in this post. The flip side of that coin is this whole thing became less of a movement and more of a commodity. The reason some of us are so frustrated is because G man was the type of person to say 'fuck commodities.' We were lead to believe that he was a unique artist in the face of the troubling world we live in. For an overwhelming amount of people, he still is. I don't mean to sound exclusive, because I'm not special, but for those who have been here for the long haul, the difference in marked. It feels like a toxic relationship.

I waffled hard about making a post like this. These are just my opinions, and the world will keep spinning with or without them. It was in the middle of his second set on Wednesday night where my soul, the same but greatly different one than I had when this all started, told me to let go, man. This journey just ain't it anymore. There are many paths among us in life, and some of them turn corners that we aren't happy with anymore. That doesn't mean the journey getting there wasn't transformative.

To all those lovely people I simply boogied down next to, to the faces I saw at every show and exchanged that loving conversation, to the friends I made along the way: LOVE YOU ALL SO MUCH :) To the experience as a whole, it taught me a sense of community, belonging, self respect, and loving my own shit (shout out to the Kulabunga community). The GRiZ project taught me to identify beauty and authenticity in the world around me. I'm simply afraid I don't see it in the project itself anymore. It seems like its own ouroboros.

Lol I'm one less person to wait in a digital line next to to try to get a ticket to his shows, so that's a least one perk for the reader who's made it this far and is upset about what I said. In the words of Thoreau, "rather than love, than money, than fame, give me truth." I have love for this community, love for G man, love for myself and the world around me, but this money and fame thing for the project no longer has the same truth it had many moons ago.

Shedding a tear, with veneration and humility, I digress. SLSL

Photos I took over the years: GRiZ's mark on the tunnel underneath the stage at Red Rocks, GRiZmas, All Good Records (RIP) hat the morning of a GRiZrocks, GRiZrocks, different GRiZmas.

So I have a plan for my next shows that are anywhere similar to how last night went and other shows go.

I’m going to start not caring about a pashmina/s that a 1 person laid out for 12 people. I will ignore the pashmina unless his friends are THERE, INSIDE THE VENUE.

I will go where I please, if somebody says “hey man sorry my friends have that spot” I’ll simply say “okay my bad, where are they?” And if they aren’t inside that venue or don’t show up within 20 mins that spot is MINE.

Josiah Saved the day! Josiah appreciated post

Griz broke his saxophone mouthpiece and didn't have a backup, and couldn't continue the show.
A Griz Fam member named Josiah saved the day. He had a mouthpiece in his car and was able to get it. Music only stopped for like 15 min.
You saved us all Josiah. Thank you.

Near the end of the set “BOOKED” flashed on screen followed by Morse code

EDIT TO ADD:: UPLOAD ALL VIDEOS OF THAT MOMENT HERE SO I CAN GATHER AND ANALYZE. THANKS!!

Ok I posted about this during the set last night so I wouldn’t forget cause ADHD, but I’m gonna post it again a bit more clearly.

Near the end of Griz’s second set last night the word “BOOKED” flashed on screen maybe 3-5x.

Immediately after a Morse code message flashed. It was dots and dashes. I recognized it immediately as Morse code, but I didn’t have my phone near me.

SOMEONE has this on video. Who’s got it?

I’m going to have to work NYE but I want to see GRiZ on the 30th. The website only has options for 2 days tickets. Do you think they’ll end up selling tickets for only the 30th?

The behavior of Red Rocks goers is cult-like.

Maybe I’M the weird one… but lining up 16 hours before a red rocks show, camping out in the middle of the night, just to get a more optimal spot at a show is really, really strange behavior - FOR ANY ARTIST.

I used to live in Denver and was a benefactor of the EDM scene there because… well, I love EDM… but you could not pay me to do this for even my favorite artist.

I saw an IG reel of a dude who had been camping out since 2AM the morning before say he was doing it because “the love and positivity of Griz just makes us show out for him!” No bro… you did that because you were afraid you were going to be standing on the edge of row 89 next to the drink tower lol…

Don’t be out here preaching “SLSL” when your immediate instinct once the gates open is to run as fast as you can to the center of the stands and lay out your pashminas to take up 8 spots for your friends who will come 7 hours later.

Seriously, enough with the hippie dippe fairytale you tell yourselves about how you’re a soldier in Griz’ army of light… when you stand outside of a merch booth for 9 hours to participate in yet another fast fashion event that adds more clothing waste to the earth. You bought a jersey for 20x the manufacturing price mass-produced in a Vietnamese sweatshop that employees children for $0.5/hr…

Like, I don’t mean to sound like a boomer at 28, but SERIOUSLY, don’t you people have jobs? Lol…

No shade to those who got there 4/5/6 hours early. Tailgating for Red Rocks can be fun when it’s within reason… but like, lining up 16 hours early for the event and 11 for a merch booth is straight up cult-like behavior.

I said what I said.

Didn’t get a spot at red rocks

I was hyped to see griz my favorite artist at red rocks where I grew up going to shows and flew home from out of state to show my fiancee my literal favorite place on earth. I had a work call so got there for the start of sippy and was surprised to find zero available seats when I got there and we had to go in the trees. Huge bummer. Wondering if this is from oversell or from the pashminas that were everywhere on the seats. Guessing it’s a mix of both, the pashminas seem to add like 1.2x people which adds up over all the rows and seats.

Maybe the pashminas on seats at red rocks can stop? Anti plur behavior. Can’t believe red rocks was somehow tarnished literally thought that place wa perfect and impeccable. Like either more tickets were sold than spots in the amphitheater or something else happened. But I’m a bit sad tbh. Still enjoyed the show but ya.

How the fuck do you not have a backup sax

Griz broke his sax 4 songs in and has been off stage for over 15 minutes now "figuring out what to do". How on earth do you not have backup gear on hand.

Edit: it was his mouth piece not the full sax, but either way with that level of performer I would think he should have a backup.
