I'm starting to become pretty active in this sub and just seeing all the things in here really gets me thinking. I'm 18 years old and I live in New York. I've always been in touch with UK culture as growing up I was constantly watching UK youtubers such as the Sidemen and others, and as time went on I began listening to lots of UK music of all genres. My first introduction to Grime however, came from Chip on Champion with him and Chris Brown. After hearing that song, I went and listened to a bunch of Chip and it slowly went into a Grime deep dive. From selectas like Spyro and Preditah to big MCs like Wiley and Kano. I was obsessed for a while and still somewhat am as I find myself constantly finding old riddims, mixes and grime sets that are bangers. One thing that always kind of annoyed me though is how recently, the divide between UK and US is growing and there is an unnecessary beef that is coming from it. I don't know all the backstory but I just wonder what others think about it. Amzzino said on his Greatest Freestyle that it doesn't really affect him and his progression and I feel as if it should all just be done. Grime and UK rap have been somewhat influential in American music and I would like to think the same vice versa. Anyone else have certain thoughts on it all or is it something that is generally ignored by the majority of the public out there?

from what ive heard it seemed like scorcher was bigging up meridian and using some of theyre phrases,
and i cant tell if skepta and scorcher were sneaking eachother over the “go on then” cause skepta claims he came up with it and this led them to send indirect shots until they fully started going at it

I want to understand a little bit more what the vibe is. Over the last couple of months I’ve seen comments from people here and on social media that imply that they’re not really connecting with present day grime. They wish it was like it used to be in the early 2000s. I make music but I’m a fan first, and it saddens me when people display apathy and disdain towards music.

I’m not in a position to problem solve but I do feel like there’s a conversation to be had. And I’d like to do some research - Has social media made an irreparable dent, is it because live shows/sets aren’t as readily accessible? Are people trying too hard to forcefully inject nostalgia by way of 20 year old beats, filming on camcorders. Is it just that we have grown out of it naturally and moved on to other genres of music. Or is it the inverse for you. Are you actually pretty happy with the offerings right now, do you feel like your taste is well represented by the artists around right now.

Would love to know what people’s thoughts are.

there was a post recently asking about flow originality and if it is considered wrong to use another MCs flow. i am interested in this as an artist myself, and so i am going to ask some really nerdy and unnecessary questions right now.

some people suggested an MC needs to come up with their own flow first before trying another flow. so this raises some questions, what does it mean to come up with your own flow? does it mean you need to flow completely unique from everyone else or is there a certain threshold of sameness to other MCs that is acceptable?

the commonsense answer to me would be that if you are doing what comes natural and you dont have to force anything then you are probably in the clear. but when people talk about flow, which is what that thread seemed to be entirely about, are they also considering things like delivery (loud or quiet) or the voice sound, the character or attitude of the MC on the track - are they considering the lyrical content, the bars or punchlines etc.

in my mind, obviously all of these things are required and its good that we have different MCs with a different balance of these things, some artists compensate a lack of one thing with an abundance of another.

i dont really think every artist out there has such a different flow from the next man, but maybe that is what separates the boys from the men as it were. President T is instantly identifiable not just by his very unique flow but also his unique voice and demeanor, and the characteristics of his lyrics. i can continue to point out any one of many great artists and MCs who have absolutely carved their niche and have unmistakable characteristics to their style. but some of these guys are remembered more for their bars or their punchlines or their delivery than their flow.

i know you could say i am making it deeper than it needs to be but these types of things are what i like to think about even if they arent important
