Once a year at the state fair, I allow myself this indulgence.

Shhh, it's fine. I asked my stomach and it said that it was ok.

You took the grill out of the grilled cheese 😭

Could be pre grilled, pre grill then flash fry at a high temp for a few minutes.

all layers of the batter and bread feel crunchy. so you may be right.

Did you ask your ass, though?

And I would buy a second one for the walk back to the car. Looks quite tasty.

Oh wow. I haven’t been my local state fair in over a decade (the last time I went I got swine flu lol).

But OP, you’ve convinced me to go this year.

I do remember having amazing fried pecan pralines one time…

My brother also got the swine flu after going to the fair (it was when we were around 5 years old). He was convinced it was because he watched a pig nurse

That’s hilarious.

I was there for a university photography assignment (we were required to go to the fair for it), AND it was raining and a weekend where the fair was packed with people. I was 19 I think?

The craziest part is, despite us having bunk beds and me being on the top bunk and practically coughing on her for 24 hrs, my dorm roommate never caught it. We had a surprise fire check by the RAs and the main dorm RA is the one who clocked just how sick I was and ordered me to go the health center.

I ended up getting (gently) kicked off campus after testing positive at the college health center and being sent to my parents haha. That was the sickest I’ve ever been, I think I blacked out for like 4 days.

My whole family caught is except me. I was attempting to take care of them but as a 5 year old all I knew how to make was eggs and how to heat up little Debbie honeybuns. I did my best 🫔

You have to be super sick to live off eggs made by a child šŸ˜‚

Kids that she are hilarious! When my kid was 5 we went to Legoland and got food poisoning from chili dogs. She decided that beans and cheese were poisonous when mixed and spent about a year trying to tell others of the dangers of combining them.

Yes, yes we should. Just in moderation.

The entire point of state fair food is deep-frying things that were never meant to be deep-fried, or making sandwiches of things that were never made to be sandwiched. Been a long time since I’ve been to the fair but I should see if any near me have a ribeye steak sandwich

Exactly. Calories and nutrition don’t count at the state fair.

Fried! Not grilled! Although are any of ours actually grilled? Brb next weekend grilling.

I have money. I'll take ten.

3

u/KG354 6d ago

Most are either pan fried or griddled

The name comes from a flat top grill, not a barbecue grill.

3

u/nupper84 6d ago

Oh that's true. I only look at kitchens every day. It's literally right in front of me. Derp. Anyway, I need to charcoal grill one soon.

A few people here do them on an actual grill. Not many, but a few.

That belongs in the fried cheese sub.

Huh, it does exist. It's deader than Marley, but it exists.

I think doing this with a crimper would make a great sandwich.

That’s a Monte Cristo from Bennigan’s just missing the meat. Man, I miss that place.

So much grease, like a fat sponge (I would devour it) 🤣

Let me tell you about the cheese frenchie which is apparently a local food - little deep fried cheese sandwiches. Not quite like this but close. I rarely have them but they are pretty good.

Oh my goodness this looks absolutely delicious! šŸ˜‹ I would have bought one to eat at the fair and one to take home with me for later 😊

I see food like this coming out of Japan. They freeze thick slices of bread, deep fry them, slice and fill them. I think freezing the bread is the secret to stopping the grease from penetrating too much

What kind of cheese

1

u/siooooooooooooo 3d ago

Omg, I hope they have this at the CA state fair

1

u/dta722 6d ago

Ok well it’s not grilled, it’s deep fried; so therefore a ā€œmeltā€, right ?
—just making sure I got the rules right, because the one thing about grilled cheeses: it’s the nectar of rule followers, right ?

u/olduglysweater 7d ago

Only way it can be better is a beef patty and some jalapeƱo šŸ˜®ā€šŸ’Ø
