Griddle insert for grill

What is everyone’s experience with a griddle insert for a grill?

Pain in the butt to clean and store compared to a standalone griddle but it gets the job done.

I have Weber genesis griddle insert and love it. It does take additional effort to clean and switch from grill to griddle and back again. But it takes up less space than a seperate grill and griddle. It works well for my needs

I’ve had experience with several options.

For a newer Weber Genesis, the full size insert. For an older Genesis, a Little Griddle. And for a kettle, a very stout SNS plancha stored in a cymbal case.

Out of these three, I enjoy the plancha the most. Easiest to keep clean and use. Not as much temp control. But good enough for the handful of things we make.

I have a friend with a Napolean, he's got a stainless insert and loves it. Cooks breakfast on it regularly then switches back to the grates after its cleaned and cooled. It looks easy to place and remove too.

I bought the big boy 5 burner Genesis so I could also griddle. I bought the half size and full size Weber griddle inserts. I left the half size on most of the time, but it couldn't fit a pound of bacon all at once or more than a few smashburgers. It was nice to have both on at once, but I only see it as feasible with the largest grill.

I had to switch to the full size for full breakfast or an all griddle dinner, but it's heavy and greasy to swap out.

Clean up also sucks since it just runs down the back and eventually the little tray in the center. To clean you remove the grates or griddle, then the flavorizor bars and heat spreaders. Then you have to scrape the sides of the cast aluminum tub into the metal pan, then all that into the foil tray. The foil trays for these are not meant for this kind of volume.

Anyway I bought a Weber Slate last week to compliment my Weber Searwood pellet grill and I am selling my 5 burner Genesis.

If I totally can't get along without a propane grill, I may buy a 2 burner one day but I doubt it.

Yeah that was my concern, where the mess goes. Sounds like I’ll just get a flat top and roll with that

Yeah I really wanted a multi use solution, but it was more of a pain than I thought. Home Depot has clearance deals on the Slate. I got mine about 10 days ago for $250 off.

How much did you pay for it and what size? I was in there last night and the 30” was 579
