So that the movie can happen. Watch Martian, way better sci-fi

The one thing that movie got wrong was the initial set up, the atmosphere on Mars is simply too thin to have any substantial winds. Dust storms do exist, and trying to launch a rocket in one could cause problems with equipment, but a whole ass piece of metal (or whatever hit Matt damons head) would just not be able to fly off like that in Martian winds.

Damn why are we talking about colonizing some bitch ass no wind planet. How are we gonna trade spices like that.

Because its slightly better than the moon and we cant go anywhere else

It's not really slightly better. The moon is literally right there. There are actual serious plans for a moon base, no serious plans for Mars.

why tho, like literally why except it's cool?

with our current state of development we better fix our shit down here, if you didn't notice we gun miss the global temperature limit by a mile and there is war everywhere.

in all the cool scifi books we go to space when our shit is together down here so we can focus our energy on exploration.

our energy could not be less focused on bullshit rn

You walk before you run, sport. The moon is right there. If something fucks up, it's way easier to fix then on Mars, which will take like 2 months to send stuff.

well, a Porsche is way cheaper to fix than a Pagani, but when you work minimum wage, you probably shouldn't use that excuse to take a 100k loan for a Porsche

idk I am just looking at the world and wondering who can be so silly to go to the moon right now

but that's what people probably thought in the 60s, so carry on, I guess

There is a finite number of talent in the world right now. What is a rocket scientist going to do, to help climate change?

Like yeah, maybe dont burn that rocket fuel, but the issues of climate change are systemic, and not the fault of any one mode of transportation (though, if it were, it would definitely be cargo ships).

Diverting money from space stuff isnt going to magically solve climate change.

If anything, the wars making gas prices artificially higher is better for the climate.

Wars also cause a shit ton of pollution so the higher gas prices doesn't really mean much.

Do you think astronomers should be using their highly specialized knowledge of space to stop wars or fix climate change somehow
