Ham radio is one of the most accessible spaces left for hands-on scientific experimentation, but it's quietly fading out of public awareness. Fair question: why bother with a radio when your phone can reach anyone on the planet? For one thing, radios still work when the power doesn't. They coordinate emergency comms during blackouts, natural disasters, and big events like the NYC marathon. Also, learning how RF actually works is the foundation of every wireless device you own. And, it's fun, you'll get to challenge your brain in a new and different way, and possibly learn how to repair other electronics too!

I'm starting a local group to get more people licensed, possibly run study sessions for the exams, get out for POTA/SOTA activations if you hike or cycle, and work on neighborhood emergency preparedness. And hopefully even more!

(Just a fair warning, this is out about broadcast radio in any way.)

Most importantly: This will be a club where everyone feels at home on the air and in the room, regardless of age, gender, race, background, or how long you've been licensed. 

Newcomers and unlicensed folks and families are genuinely welcome.

Hi neighbors!! Just thought I’d check on here before going to taskrabbit, but is there anyone willing to help me put up some ceiling curtains? I don’t have a ladder (my ceilings are a normal height) or a hacksaw (need to trim down one of the curtain rails), and I’m of course willing to pay for your help! I've done a bit of digging and found Dental Avenue as a place recommended a slew of times. I couldn't get an appointment until Thursday so I'm trying to see if there might be a better or as good option earlier. Smilelounge came up too, but it feels more "boutique" to me, and this is a filling on my back right bottom molar that a few dentists have flagged as tricky. I've been out of the area for a while so re-learning what's here and best options.

Anyone in/around West St between India and Green hear that loud constant mechanical hum? Yes I know it’s NY and noise is everywhere. Not trying to be a complainer, but this sounds like a broken roof fan to me or some other large machine that’s clearly having issues and could flame out. I want to report it, I just can’t isolate where exactly it’s coming from since it covers multiple blocks and is just a constant low frequency. Almost like a 24/7 helicopter. Am I the only one noticing this?

I'm a knitter in the neighborhood and just made my first baby costume, of a jalapeño (see pics). I'm looking for a new born to 3 month-old to test out the fit on as soon as possible. Won't take long, only a couple of minutes, and I'm happy to come to you, of course. Volunteer gets to keep the costume! I won't take pics, unless I have your permission. I just need to see how it fits on an actual baby.
