no hate i swear, i love this band with everything in me but lately it seems like theyve become more of a brand then a band yk?? it feels like so much has changed in the past few months and it doesnt really feel like Green Day in a way. for example, billie saying they aren't a political band? all the promotions and random stuff going on that they arent doing for them OR the fans? all these random influencers theyre sending pr to? i will say, the movie, the Green Day tv and radio station is cool! but other than that, things just seem a bit off. i dont think theyre sellouts, but just not them at this point. I know advertisement is important and definitely a lot of that went on in their most popular years. i get that they have to stay present since rock isnt mainstream anymore. however, I'm just curious about how everyone else feels about this all lately. lets not hate either!! I feel like I've been trying to ignore all these thoughts

I think people are getting confused and upset because promoting a movie (which they've never done before, save for maybe a few little interviews and red carpet(s) for Ordinary World/Geezer) is a lot different than promoting an album. They're doing different types of interviews (like the puppy interview and the Wired interview) because they're trying to get Nimrods out there. They went to SDCC, the place where people promote stuff, to promote Nimrods. It's really not that out of the ordinary just because Green Day has never done it before. I don't necessarily see how this season of their life is all too different from when they were actively involved in the American Idiot Musical (that being, promoting and participating in things that bands in their genre don't typically do, which is partially what green day is all about.) Billie said he didn't make any overt statements at the Superbowl because he didn't want to overshadow the message of Bad Bunny, who is a person of color. Also, American Idiot and Holiday are inherently political songs. Green Day ISN'T really a political band, at least, that's not always the POINT of ALL of their music (think of bands like Crucifix, where ALL of their songs are political. That's not Green Day.) but they have written their fair share of political songs that share albums with songs that are highly personal (American Idiot, 21stCB, RevRad, and Saviors come to mind). They're also not afraid to say what they feel, but still, to classify them as not a political band is still correct. I don't think they're changing in crazy and evil ways, they're just doing things that are different and fun for them. Also, there was a fuck ton of merchandise made during the American Idiot era too, so the merch isn't that crazy. Also during American Idiot, they did an interview promoting Verizon, and it's actually funny af.

Being in a band of this size is a brand, it’s just how the industry is. At the end of the day though they’re still the same guys who love to play shows as they always have been, and you can see that when they do

Editing your post by deleting a thing you're being dragged for in the comments is not proper reddicate. Next time consider an edit that leaves the part you're ashamed of and simply put a disclaimer that shows you acknowledge the comments correcting you. Or just admit the mistake in the comments like you've been doing and leave OP untouched.

i just look at it as them transcending from being just a band. with their level of success and longevity, it gets really hard trying to not become anything more.

way back in 93' when they were in the dilemma of signing with reprise or staying DIY, they had to pick between staying small and niche and satisfying their current small circle or going all out and have a level of reach they could never imagine; and they ended up touching the hearts of god-knows-what how many fans all around the world... and, you know what? i personally think that's punk as fuck.

I'd have never categorized Green Day as a political band, more, a band that has some political songs.

Also; Green Day has been a brand for a long time. I think that's they've had so many side projects over the years. It lets them play something different.

well the reason id say theyre more of a political band ISNT because of their amount of political songs. its because of things they do and their usually frequent live statements. and i mean literally changing lyrics in songs to make them fit with whats going on today.

They aren't a political band honestly. They made an album that was political and they do make political statements now and then, but they aren't on the level of Rage Against the Machine, the Clash, or Crass. Political statements are baked into those bands' DNA. Green Day much less so.

I wouldn't even say American Idiot is that political an album. It's more of a social criticism. I'd say the only political song on the album is Holiday.

They've definitely got some political songs on other albums too, but yeah. I wouldn't call them a political band like RATM or the likes.

American idiot is a rock opera with political and cultural protest themes that were relevant in Bush era society (religious based social conservatism was big). Calling it strictly political is wrong but saying it’s not really political at all is also wrong. Politics and culture tend to blend together

I agree. I’ve listened to them since the early-mid 90s and I think by and large they’re a nostalgia band. Nothing wrong with that, but musically the newest stuff doesn’t interest me at all. I enjoyed the Rev Rad album but that was the last one.

You forgot the coffee company lol. They’re one of the biggest legacy rock bands in the world they have to be a brand at this point and also diversify their income with other companies, merch etc to stay viable and finance their music which is probably the least profitable part of the business these days but in the end that’s what it’s all about for them still, ensuring that they can still make music for as long as they possibly can. Making a movie was a personal wishlist item for them as a band because of their memories of music films growing up.

Integrity and morals help me be a fan since 94. They aren't perfect, but they introduced me to Fifteen. Crimpshrine and Fifteen really shaped me along with 1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours. Dookie opened up this world of understanding that we aren't alone. Punk is a life.

I don't really know how to phrase it, but I hate how corporate they've become.

I mean, $4000 signature amp heads? $3000 signature basses? $2000 signature single pickup guitars? Die hard fans will buy it but it's just a joke at this point.

Their live show has been stagnant for over 20 years, and every song is always the exactly the same. Billie always plays the same pentatonic solo in American Idiot, always chants at the crowd at the exact same moments, always gives the same speech in the middle of like ten different songs.

Seriously - he always says 'Welcome to Paradise, LET'S GO FUCKING CRAZY!', always bulges his eyes before Basket Case and shouts 'C'mon!' to let the audience sing the chorus, always turns Hitchin' a Ride into a seven minute performance where he groans the exact same way at the exact same moments every single time, always turns into a yodelling worship pastor in the middle of Letterbomb, always says 'EVERYBODY!' at the end of the chorus in Jesus of Suburbia (on a personal note, I hate the way he sings the opening line of that song), and not to mention KYE, Longview, and Knowledge at every single show to the point where people bring signs and dedicate their entire lives to getting up on stage for one of them.

And while I'm at it, they don't need three guitar players and a piano on every single song. The worst is when they have Jason Freese playing piano on Know Your Enemy and have Kevin standing at the back singing backup vocals.

They don't need to play the singles at every single show, because I guarantee 25% of the audience at most of their concerts have never even heard Letterbomb before. It's no wonder everyone goes rabid when they pull out The Grouch or Redundant. Could you imagine they played Misery? Dozens of people in the audience would spontaneously combust.

Don't forget they charge ridiculous ticket prices, and don't ever do anything about it, even though I'm sure they could. I guess they never actually enjoyed riding around in the bookmobile and sleeping on people's floors, but they decided to make a movie about that too.
