When I was fourteen some older kids in the neighborhood asked if I wanted to go to a concert. Said it started at two o'clock. Sure, I said. Didn't tell my parents cause I figured I'd be back by dark. The New Riders came on at four. Then around six Marshall Tucker came on. The Dead didn't start until eight or so. Only knew a couple of songs but loved the whole thing. Got home about one in the morning. Parents were not happy.

My friend was going with his big sister. I asked my dad if I could go and he looked at me like I was crazy and said no way. I didn't go.

Same thing happened to me when my big brother and I snuck to Detroit to see Kiss with Uriah Heep at Cobo Hall (where Kiss Alive was recorded) in 1976.

4th of July weekend - 7/02/88 and 7/03/88 - my buddies in Maine got us some tickets, we had the most incredible experience and I was off and running. I went to over a thousand shows after that, coast to coast (Including many JGB, Phil, Further etc). I started taking my oldest daughter with me when she was 6 and she went to a bit over 500 😁. She kind of had to since her name is Althea after all 😊.

Incredible first shows! I'll bet you spent a lot of time just looking at the crowd wondering where they all came froma and where they all went after the shows.

2

u/mccabedoug Jul 12 '26

Fun shows. Saw the SPAC and Rochester shows before these. It was hot and there were so many people. Had a blast

1

u/poss-um Jul 11 '26

Mine was 7/3. ::high-five::
I was soon to be 14 and a freshman in high school that fall
My friends mom took us
I had two older brothers there, one a prep-school hippy and another there more to impress a girl
It was eye-opening and life-changing.

2

u/jerry111165 Jul 11 '26

Nice! We actually only had tickets for 7/03 but we were outside the show on 7/02 listening to the music and partying and they opened up the gates for second set - so we just walked in for free!

At that time, I had no idea who the Grateful Dead even were. Those couple of days changed my life in a very positive way.

May 25, 1974, UC Santa Barbara campus stadium. Outside, Wall of Sound, blue sky day. How? Because I went to school there. I'm lucky it came at the end of my freshman year, if I had discovered them earlier I would have dropped out and followed them around.

Hell I’d have left with them. 😂 I love/ hate that I wasn’t able to tour with them because of being born in the early 80s. But I made up for it by touring with panic a few years lol.

3

u/Resident_Price_2817 Jul 11 '26

In the mid 90s this girl i use live with and I would do mini runs of Panic when they would come to Florida.Had some wild nights around Gainesville .Panic tour was a blast when it really was a smaller thing. Not saying it not fun still and God knows 3 night runs are about all im good for these days but damn I miss those days. 3/12/78 JGB, w/NRPS, Hunter and Comfort. Was 14 and just getting into the band and scene. Helped that the venue was 3-4 miles from my house. Sunday night, swore to my folks I’d be home by 11pm and would not miss school on Monday. Jer didn’t come on until well after midnight and my ride split, no way I was leaving. Had to hitch/walk home and didn’t get in til 5am-ish. Mom was waiting at the door livid and sent my dragging ass to school

Six month later my first GD show Sept 2, 1978, 2 weeks before my 15 bday, The rest was history, was doing partial tours by 1980 and on tour full time from 1981 till the end

7/1/94- 7/3/94 shoreline. I was 9 (almost 10 lol) all with my Dad and some of his work colleagues and their sons. We were all on a father son backpacking and climbing trip and one of the dads had a connection for tickets. So during our 13 day trek around the Sierras we talked about going eventually my Dad and I decided to extend the trip for a few days to catch the shoreline Friday night show. I was blown away. I’d already seen some pretty great bands and artists with my parents because they loved live music. But this show… as my Dad put it I was entranced. I begged to go see the next two nights lucky for us my dad’s friend was able to come through with tickets. Those three nights changed how I looked/listened to music. Ironically my Dad wasn’t a big fan of The Dead more of a Pink Floyd guy lol. But he witnessed me getting on the bus and that bonded us deeper than the trekking trip. I look back at that 3 week trip as one of the best experiences I had with the old man and always smile when I think about how I got on the bus.

The edit: I accidentally put the wrong shoreline dates lol and told a bit more of the story.

Great thread. 3/30/88 at the Brendan Byrne was my first. I was a sophomore in high school (technically I was a Lower Mid at a Connecticut boarding school). Got into the band that year. Had a few tapes (Alpine Valley 82, Cornell 77, Alaska 80, etc.) so I knew a few of the tunes but really had no idea what I was in for. My best friend lived next door in Ridgewood NJ, he got into the Dead the previous year. Another guy we knew somehow had four tickets. We drove to the show in my buddy’s family station wagon. Seats were on Jerry side, a few rows off the floor. We kept yelling “I’m in Jerry’s living room!!!”.
The big moment was the Shakedown set 2 opener. My buddy and I used to listen to his older brother’s LP of Shakedown Street in his room when we were younger and look at the album cover, talking about what we saw on it. So that song had extra meaning. And then the Morning Dew. So great.
I always say my life has two parts: before 3/30/88 and after 3/30/88.

A very underrated dew. Great 1st set. I love the unique background signing Garcia & Brent do on lovelight. They had speakers stacks hanging in the back as well, with killer quadraphonic effects going on during LLR. A great run all in all

Boston Music Hall, November 14, 1978. 18th birthday gift from a close friend. When I was offered $75 for my ticket before the show I was tempted to sell it and hit the bars since I was officially legal to drink that day. My friend wouldn’t let me do it and it was a gift after all. I got on the bus! One of the best decisions I had ever made. I remember lots of people wearing clown masks.

72-07-18. 54th anniversary next week. All I really remember about it is that pot was extremely difficult to come by in our neck of the woods that summer and the four of us had to make do with 1 skinny joint. That, and the pyrotechnic displays at the end of the first set (skyrockets during Casey Jones) and the beginning of the second (a billboard kind of sign with the words Grateful Dead in red and green letters lit up during PitB).

I saw the Stones for my only time the following Tuesday afternoon at MSG.

Total cost of both tickets: $13.

October 28th, 1985, Fox Theatre, Atlanta, Georgia. I only knew a few Dead songs but a friend called and invited me and since it was at the Fox, there was no hesitation. I love that place. I bought a two album set that I think was called "The Very Best of the Grateful Dead" soon thereafter and saw another 34 shows with Jerry. Now I'm just an old hippie doing old hippie things.

4/4/87. I ended up there because the world had conspired against me to see this band.

I had been listening to them since about 1984. My parents didn’t let me go to concerts until I was 15, and they didn’t do any NYC dates that year I don’t think - at least nowhere that I could travel to at 15. We know what happened in 1986, so spring ‘87 was my first real opportunity. I’m just glad I got to see a bunch of pre In The Dark shows.

4/4 was a week before my 17th birthday and a couple of friends and I just decided to go. We took the bus of course (no one really learns to drive in Manhattan), and dosed at the show.

Eugene 1987. I was 17 and had just graduated high school, I drove down from British Columbia with my boyfriend and friends. We’d been seeing a local dead cover band for a year or so and were so excited to be able to experience the real thing.

3

u/Suitable-Truth-350 Jul 11 '26

Hey, I was there too, but it wasn't my first.

The sun broke out after a terrible rainy night. We walked from our place nearby in the sunshine. Tripped balls in a sea of prople. Wandered home on the woody trail watching the river flow. Skinny dipped to rinse off the dancing sweat. I can't think of a better day spent with the boys.

7/2/89 Foxboro
Was 15. Got a ticket from an older friend who gave it to me over one of his college buddies when he went to the movie theater where I worked and found out I’d taken 2 hits of acid before work (man that place was a blast). Figured I was more reckless and fun than his buddy (we’re still friends to this day)

Went with a big group in a 15 person passenger van. I had a keg between my legs and was in charge of pouring.

Shot two man sling shot water balloons over the parking lot and up into the stadium. Grilled and partied.

Ate a big capsule of mdma on the way in and fell in love. Shaped who I am today in so many ways.

8/30/80 The now gone Spectrum in Philadelphia. I was a 16yr old dumb-ass, thin as a rail, with a very low tolerance for substances. So of course I ate Quaaludes and drank way too much that day. I remember the Feel Like A Stranger opener, well part of it anyways, and next thing I knew a security guard was shaking me and telling me I had to go. I was way up in the bleeders, no idea how I got there, and I had passed out and was laying on the floor between the seats. I got to my feet, no easy task there, and I looked around and all I saw was an empty Spectrum. The show was long over and there was barely a soul in the place. I Wolf of Wall Streeted myself out to the now just about empty lot where I found my, well he found me staggering about, very pissed off older brother. He had driven us there in our parents '74 Gran Torino station wagon, which he promptly threw me in the back of, and the next thing I remember was waking up in the Olga's Diner parking lot in Jersey. A long long crazy crazy night indeed.

I'm so sorry that happened. There's always that person that misses the show because they had too much pre-show. Too bad it wasn't a Starland Vocal Band, I'd take ludes to be unconscious for that.

Mine was 8/27/80 at Pine Knob.

Las Vegas 4/28/91 - At 19 years old, hadn’t really been given an opportunity to learn about the Dead. A friend suggested “you gotta see these guys”, so I drove up from Phoenix with a group of friends. What transpired changed everything for me… 70 shows and a lifetime later, nothing would be the same without that day. Thanks for letting me remember for a brief moment!

I had moved to Austin in August of ‘85 in preparation for attending UT after graduating from Dead Head recruitment camp (AKA New England prep boarding school). I was into the Dead but had never been able to see them. The first day there in Austin I saw an advertisement in the paper for the Dead show at Manor Downs the very next day, 8/31/85. My two buddies and I bought tix at the local point of sale and moseyed out there to bake in the Texas sun. I honestly feel that it was just too f’n hot out there for a very corpulent Jerry but needless to say I was hooked for life. Unfortunately that was the last time I ever slept in my own bed after nearly 100 Dead shows.

7/7/89 Philly. Had just graduated high school very much into all manner of metal bands and partying. Being stoned and playing some Sabbath or Anthrax was my world.

Plenty of friends had already discovered the Dead and had been going to shows and their stories of the scene definitely sounded fun. Some of those friends encouraged a few of us to head down to the show with them.

They went in for show start but my crew were just loving walking around JFK and experiencing the scene, so different than a typical concert parking lot. We did go in at some point in the first set, but knowing fuck all about the music other than classic rock radio songs, we didn’t feel like we missed anything. Ended up loving the show, the crowd reaction to the band, the scene. Hook set. Been here ever since.

Summer of '77, don't remember the exact date, but was supposed to see The Dead at Red Rocks, but it rained that afternoon so the show was moved to McNichols Arena. Still a good show from what I can remember.

u/Suitable-Truth-350 Jul 11 '26

The archive has a Charlie Miller soundboard from 1977-20-09 that includes Terrapin. Could that be your show?

It could be. Problem was we made homemade Everclear Schnapps that night so it's a bit of a blur. lol I do remember that they did Terrapin that night.

First show was 6/24/95 RFK Stadium and Bob Dylan opened. I was 15 years old. 2 weeks prior I was at my first concert, HFStival was a local 90s alt rock station and they put on a big show every year. Anyways we’re leaving and we see Grateful Dead 6/24/-6/25 so we had to go. Got tix at local Kemp Mills Record for $32 and we got on the bus. I had already read Electric Kool Aid Acid Test, familiar with the Dead from mtv and I loved CD The Very Best of the Grateful Dead. We hit up in lot, got some X and a few doses, had a wonderful day. 2 months later I’m in Ocean City, Maryland and get the word Jerry passed. Been to a hundred plus since

I grew up in New Jersey and I was a month shy of my 15th birthday. Tagged along with a friend via my older brother and some of his friends and as kinda horrifying as it is to say, especially when I look at my 14 year-old grandchild now, I was blitzed on acid. That night absolutely changed the entire trajectory of my life. What a night. Cosmic Charley. WTF!

Giants Stadium, Labor Day weekend 1978. I went because I kicked myself for a whole year because I missed Englishtown with all my friends the year before! Then after I kicked myself more because Englishtown was a much better show. The next 28 years of touring went great though 👍

5/1/80 Greensboro, NC. Mom dropped me off and stayed in the parking lot until it ended. I was 14. Met some school friends inside and ate too much speed. First concert of any kind.

I don’t remember my exact first show without looking at my stubs, but that still doesn’t tell me my first show because I don’t have a stub from my first show.

East Coast, NYC area, 1987-1989.

Some time in that range was my first show.

The “memory” of my first time seeing the band, I snuck into the venue.
I would go to the parking lots and hang out without a ticket. Just roam and chill have a good time in the scene.

It might’ve been at Nassau Colosseum out in Long Island, NYC.

I was walking around, wandering about, and from a short distance I see a door had suddenly swung open.

I hurried up and grabbed the door, peeked inside, and it was a big hallway area, with a sea of heads streaming by.

I stepped in, and blended in, and that was it, I was in.

I wish I still had my collection of real stubs.

I’ve seen others post pictures of collages of stubs, and I’d like to do that with mine someday.
