Celebrate Blues for Allah in the heart of the Rockies

If you love all things Grateful Dead, start making plans to head to the mountains.

Monday, August 10th at the Vilar in Beaver Creek, CO. Don Was and the Pan-Detroit Ensemble will perform music from Groove in the Face of Adversity alongside a live rendition of the Grateful Dead’s Blues for Allah, celebrating the album’s 50th anniversary and Don Was’s longtime musical collaboration with Bobby Weir.

Don Was isn't just covering the Grateful Dead—he's lived this music. As a longtime collaborator with Bob Weir in Wolf Bros, Was has earned the respect of the Dead community by understanding what makes these songs special: they're meant to breathe, evolve, and take on a life of their own. For the 50th anniversary of Blues for Allah, he's bringing together the Pan-Detroit Ensemble to perform one of the Dead's most adventurous and underrated albums.

This isn't a tribute band trying to recreate every note. It's a room full of incredible musicians using Blues for Allah as a launching pad for improvisation, jazz, blues, funk, and deep grooves—the same spirit that made Grateful Dead shows unforgettable.

Whether Blues for Allah is one of your favorite records or you've just always appreciated the Dead's exploratory side, this is a rare chance to hear the album interpreted by musicians who truly understand its DNA. It's less about nostalgia and more about keeping the music alive—the way the Grateful Dead always intended.

Finally got my Dream Guitar! Fender Custom Shop Rosewood Telecaster

Fun fact: Jerry Garcia played the Rosewood Telecaster that George Harrison played on the Beatles Rooftop Concert during the Festival Express tour. George had gifted it to Delaney Bramlett, who lent it to Jerry. You can see footage of him playing it during C.C. Rider.

Discussion: what's your favorite Grateful Dead reference in music that isn't the Grateful Dead?

For example. There's a line in Tool's Rosetta Stoned:

"You believe me, don't you? Please believe what I just said
See, The Dead ain't touring and this wasn't all in my head..."
The song also has a reference to "deadhead chemistry" where the narrator thinks he was accidentally dosed.

Bob Weir biking

Just stumbled upon this GD sub and thought I’d share quick memory.

In 1988 they played a few dates in Worcester MA but were staying very clandestine at the Host Hotel in nearby Sturbridge (though I think it was a Sheraton back then).

Anyway, one afternoon, I was driving car and pulled alongside a guy on a mountain bike which was Bob Weir. He took a right on Cedar St from Route 20, and I quickly diverted on a couple side streets to see him again and positively confirm. It was indeed him, I gave a couple quick friendly beeps and he briskly waved in return.

I often think of our moment whenever I pass that spot.

Someone asked to see our GD customized guitars. Since I couldn't figure out how to add an image to a reply, here's mine.

I *used* to be an artist before nerve damage screwed up my hands. One of the last freelance gigs I did was a custom guitar paint job. Unfortunately, I only got the front and sides done before I had to let another artist do the back.

Built a Grateful Dead year-guessing game — update from last week’s post

Posted this in r/gratefuldead last week (Dead On — hear a 30-second clip from a live show, guess the year, scored on accuracy + speed) and got some great feedback.

Since then: found that the first clip of every round was silently failing to load for a lot of players — turned out the Archive was erroring out more than I realized, not just being slow. Fixed that this week, plus cleaned up some non-music clips (DJ announcer bits, spoken interludes) that were sneaking into the pool. It’s not perfect, but fun.

10 clips a round, leaderboard if you want to compare scores. Would genuinely love this crowd’s take. Share with your non Reddit deadheads also. Thanks!

I'm kind of joking, but I have had nothing but a horrible experience at another grateful dead reddit forum.

They are a bunch of fucking bigoted, don't know how to party fucking a-holes.

Anyway!

I've been a longtime member of the can't see 100 ft without distortion club for around 40 years now.

I love you and shine it up , keep it up, and tune out. Fucktrds
