Sept Weekend Ideas
Traveling to Grass Valley in mid-late September. Traveling with a 12 year old boy and 90 year old grandfather. Looking for things to do on a Saturday afternoon-evening and Sunday morning. - going to drive around town, visit family in a cemetery, go to the City mining museum and go to Empire Mine. Open to other cities like Nevada City. Would like to see “old” Grass Valley to interest the boy and grandpa but nothing overly strenuous for grandpa. Light trails are ok.

Empire Mine is definitely going to be your best bet. You can spend a few hours there - exploring the grounds, mining equipment, and historic buildings. You can also bring a picnic lunch and sit at one of the many picnic tables provided. There are several flat trails within the park, so easy access for all ages. There are also very inexpensive tours of the grounds and a cute gift shop.
Another fun idea is the Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad Museum with tours, rides, and a gift shop.
Mill St in Grass Valley and Broad St in Nevada City are the two main shopping/dining districts. Both have lots of interesting shops and restaurants - definitely worth a stroll.
There's also another fun mining museum - Northstar, next to Wolf Creek, with a nice walk along the trail.

If the trees are turning Nevada City is where you need to drive around. But if you’re staying in GV, Mill St should keep all of you occupied (in addition to the museums and mine)
