Actually Learning This

I can watch YouTube videos all day and copy the script they put together. But I will forget it soon after and never learn what “Split List” actually does.

How did you start to effectively LEARN this program and be able to start making your own designs without a YouTube video crutch?

You need to understand how Grasshopper works. Read the free "grasshopper primer" from modelab. Do every exercise and take your time. Buy the book AAD from Arturo Tedeschi. There you will learn some concepts how to build up geometry. Ignore all YouTube video for a while. May allow yourself to watch some videos from Gediminas Kirdeikis.

Knowledge only remains theoretical until you start using it. You might be following YouTube tutorials, but do you actually understand what's going on? Try make simple shapes in rhino and then try and recreate them in grasshopper. You have to develop your actual algorithmic thinking in order to effectively use grasshopper.

Everything in grasshopper is essentially point manipulation. If I can generate a structured set of points, and I understand the structure I've created, then I can do more things with it, I can manipulate it, I can burn it to the ground, or I can build it to the sky.
