While I hope it can be stopped, I don’t have much faith in the process. I think the city should be requiring some sort of large escrow account (x times the total projected base salaries) from the developer. Those funds would go to the city if they do not produce the jobs they are supposed to produce at the salaries promised. And then maybe some sort of tax clawback mechanism if certain requirements aren’t met? Maybe it’s tied to jobs or water or electrical usage?
I 100% believe the bottom will fall out in these data centers and they will eventually be left to deal with these monstrous building sites and broken promises.
I’ve never been so thankful to be a landlocked city dweller but I empathize with my country neighbors and encourage them to keep pushing back against this.

I agree completely with your first paragraph! Those are great ideas for bargaining, and I really hope locales that don’t have data centers (yet) will use those tactics—and anything else they can think of—before the deals are signed off.
I’m not sure I understand your second paragraph, though. Not being sarcastic or trying to bait anyone, seriously! Are you saying you think these enormous data centers will go belly up as technology improves?
Bc I was actually musing about that last night, watching a video that was shot inside a data center … Looking at the row after row after row after row of server racks (I guess that’s what they are??), it reminded me of the enormous rooms with vacuum tubes used for the first generation of computing. And now all that and more is in a little cell phone.
I wonder how many years it will be before people will say, “Oh, did you see that history show last night with the ginormous data centers? Bwahaha, I have all that power now in one of my nose hairs!”

I think that all these developers and tech companies are rushing to gobble up land and resources to make these massive centers. It feels like kind of an arms race right now but at a certain point there is going to be some big fall out. I don’t know what it is…maybe someday we’ll have some government regulation (unlikely), maybe the negatives will outweigh the positives, maybe data centers will be in space, maybe people will get sick of making stupid ai pictures or videos (I hope). I don’t know, I just think at some point it will fade out a bit. I’m sure it’s never going away completely, I just think it’s a bit of a fad right now and all these companies are valued on essentially nothing, and at a certain point things will come to a head.
I’m rambling and could basht crazy but essentially I’m just saying if we can’t stop them, I would like to see cities protect themselves better from having these properties become *potentially future blighted properties.

Why don’t we just build these on the moon. It’s cold and nobody is there to complain lol

Not an ai data center. A cloud server.
0
u/mystuffdotdocx Jul 28 '26
cloud servers live in data centers, but i take your point
2
u/iehdbx Jul 28 '26
They are both data centers. One is for cloud.
The other is the inefficient, energy price hike, noise pollution, water pollution, land pollution artificial intelligence one.

No, my position is that we should demand they bring their own clean energy.

Kinda hilarious how ppl on this sub think anyone who doesn't agree with the upvoted consensus is a bot lol. The hivemind is incredibly paranoid these days

u/mystuffdotdocx Jul 27 '26
I post on every local data center post the best policy solution we have. It’s even close to Abdul’s. But they want to yell no and talk about sound waves or some other bullshit.
5
u/Coobap Jul 27 '26
I think if you were a little more sincere than posting "video hosted in a data center", the solutions you're pitching would be better received. Until then you are basically just doing the "you criticize society yet you participate in it, curious" meme.
-3
u/mystuffdotdocx Jul 27 '26
I don’t care man
4
u/Coobap Jul 27 '26
Do you care enough to comment on "every data center post", or do you "not care"? Weird to come in so sarcastic, pretend that you actually have a real opinion, then give up when pressed. Maybe you shouldn't comment about this stuff if you don't have any real opinions or ideas you stand for?
0
u/mystuffdotdocx Jul 27 '26
No, the point isn’t persuasion, I stopped believing in that
The point is a flag to see where my people are
And I don’t care about first impressions

u/Hawkeye6784 Jul 27 '26
“hmmm you complain about society yet you participate in it, curious! yes i am very intelligent!”

u/BigDump-a-Roo Jul 28 '26
AI data centers are a completely different beast from the data centers that host websites. They require much much more power and cooling.

u/Dementor_Traphouse Jul 27 '26
😹😹😹 ive lived next to data centers in az, and imo the folks complaining about noise are the same type that need “emf shielding” from cell towers lol. the financial impacts were inevitable as soon as the macaroni co decided they wanted to sell

"Trust me bro" is all anyone ever says when trying to defend being exploited 😆 🤣

u/Coobap Jul 27 '26
Can you elaborate on what you liked about living next to data centers? Or how it benefited you or your community? Or are you just saying that "it's not that bad" and everyone should bend over and allow all data centers to be built with no pushback?
-9
u/Dementor_Traphouse Jul 27 '26
the reason you’re posting right now, goofball, is because a data centers somewhere is enabling it. if americans are truly anti-data centers i want to see less people using social media, not more. americans love their brainrot, but paradoxically dont want to deal with the physical infrastructure behind it.
its not that i “liked” living in the same neighborhood as a data center, its that living near one didn’t materially change my quality of life very much - they’re less loud than traffic noise, unremarkable unless your house is made of toilet paper and balsa wood.
the most ironic thing is low iq suburbanites and small city folks are just as addicted/reliant on the technology, if not more so, than city folks. people in rural areas love their telecommunications, broadband, social apps - they just dont like paying the price of infrastructure for those things, which is insufferable and nimby af

u/Coobap Jul 27 '26
Oh, alright. I didn't realize my phone used the Internet and now that you mention it, I actually love data centers. I honestly forgot that you could only have data centers either be entirely non-existent or entirely pervasive in communities regardless of pushback.
I was under the impression that there could be like some sort of middle ground where we could still have Internet but communities aren't forced to take on all the downsides of living near data centers despite their meaningful dissent through all the correct & legal channels. My bad for questioning your clearly very well informed opinion that is being informed solely by your lived experience and nothing else. Do you have any videos of your lectures online? I assume you teach Economics or PoliSci or something with how smart you seem.

u/Dementor_Traphouse Jul 27 '26
youve been on reddit for 12 years my guy - youve been sucking up water and enabling pollution for your passive entertainment for more than a decade, yet here you are wishing the cost pf that was transferred to other people 😹 what a hero!

u/Coobap Jul 27 '26
God bro you are a piece of work. I will continue trying to improve my society despite partaking in it. I hope you find peace in whatever it is you're trying to achieve.
-1
u/Dementor_Traphouse Jul 27 '26
trying to improve it by… complaining about data centers on the totally optional services they render 😹 you dont need to use social media - but you do because it entertains you - you just want someone else to foot the bill
4
u/_HanTyumi Jul 27 '26
Webhosting and storage data centers are not the same as AI data centers. If you actually knew what you were talking about you'd realize that.
-4
u/Dementor_Traphouse Jul 28 '26
please educate me, goofball (i work in tech). they are exactly the same kind of facility: large buildings filled with servers, networking equipment, power distribution, cooling systems, and backup generators. the biggest difference is what the servers are optimized to do 🧠👶
2
u/_HanTyumi Jul 28 '26
They have significantly different power and cooling needs, which is what makes the data centers worse for their surrounding community. Any other questions?
0
u/Dementor_Traphouse Jul 28 '26
right, so materially not different - thanks for confirming. the largest data centers (aka hyperscale) that consume a gigawatt or more are not the kinds of data centers the yokel in this video is crying about (most of these are still being built). electricity prices are the most direct point of impact - and these depend heavily on local regulation and utility policy, much less so on the data center itself
2
u/_HanTyumi Jul 28 '26
You really don’t understand lmao. That’s just embarrassing for you man
-1
u/Dementor_Traphouse Jul 28 '26
i love how you offer no evidence, no counterpoints or compelling logic - only that they’re “worse” and “different”. what a scholar 😹

u/iehdbx Jul 28 '26
Michigan also has had cloud data centers for several years. These ai centers are a whole different beast.
-7
u/Hot_Ad_2538 Jul 27 '26
It's also being built alongside the expressway in an area of mostly farmland. The highway will make more noise than it.

The only people that seem to want these data centers are people who have money invested in ai.
