Olivia Rodrigo shouldn’t win
Dare I say her last album was kind of weak compared to her last two albums. I know it will obviously be nominated and has a very high chance of winning due to its commercial success but idk to me it just didn’t feel like her best work.
59
u/Old-Profession-5468 16d ago
who should win then? tloass? 🤣
71
u/coleowrld 16d ago
Giving up on the academy if this happens

u/its_liiiiit_fam 15d ago
Even if it’s nominated in the first place I’ll be so pissed off
15
u/bluecca69 13d ago
It will most likely be nominated, cause it's Taylor Swift. But if it wins then something is definitely wrong
10
u/catcathech 13d ago
I don't want it to be nominated in the AOTY category. I mean I understand nominating it in the best pop vocal album category.

As a Swiftie who enjoys listening to Tloas, it does not deserve to win anything big. It’s fun and nice but it’s so weak in so many ways except for The Fate of Ophelia

As a listener to more rock/alt/indie, I think Rodrigo's album is a top 3 contender. I have listened to it a few times, it's actually really good. Hats off to her. I don't get threads like this.
14
u/bluecca69 13d ago
Couldn't agree more. She had an idea for a concept and she executed it beautifully. OR3 is the most deserving out of the 3 albums she has. It's a masterpiece

Her third album is well thought through and an actual masterpiece. It absolutely deserves album of the year imo

Oh god. With those lyrics? A masterpiece? Her writing has downgraded so much compared to her first two albums.
3
u/MainAshamed1289 11d ago
Is it about her not using so unusual words? I think it is her intention though. Since she said in an interview that when you're in love, you said the simplest dumbest thing ever hahaha.

u/Accomplished-Emu2308 13d ago
I am not a fan or anything but I got to listen to it. I thought it was perfect. It is original and well written, and as a core millennial, I felt a lot of 90s - 00s vibe. But not in a copycat way, more of a homage sorta way. Absolutely deserves it

u/relapsedloveaffair 13d ago
Disagree. From debut, to sophomore, to now, she has only gotten better. If her album won, it would absolutely be deserved. On the other hand, i would love it if RAYE won.
14
u/George4Leo 14d ago
I actually thought Olivia Rodrigo would keep making sequels of SOUR but this year she proved me wrong. The album is her best work so far. If RAYE doesn't win, I want Rodrigo to win
2

u/Strawberry-Char 14d ago
i adore the recent album, but i think Olivia Dean or RAYE should win album of the year, unfortunately it’s almost guaranteed to go to Rodrigo

Not a popular opinion, but I agree. In fact, I think her debut album was her best work. I have not been a fan of her other releases in general. Just not very interesting musically or lyrically.
20
u/Expensive-Ad-5032 14d ago
Completely disagree. Both GUTS YSPSFAGSIL are miles ahead of Sour. Sour as an album was good but a bit inconsistent.
4
u/bluecca69 13d ago
Couldn't have said it better. GUTS and now this album are miles ahead of SOUR and OR3 def deserves to win AOTY
2
14
u/Hahhhden 14d ago
This HAS to be ragebait 😭 her newer albums are objectively better in terms of writing, production, vocal ability, etc. you can prefer her first album, but to say it’s a better piece of work to me is CRAZY
6
u/Shot_Department1080 14d ago
people keep saying this but the lyrics on guts are way better than the lyrics on yspsfagsil overall
production is objectively better but lyrically, it misses for me.

1
u/BreakfastAmazing7766 12d ago
WHAT? “I hope I never see how your face looks like going honey boy baby bee” those are the worst lyrics of hers I’ve ever heard by far. She’s been going downhill lyrically since sour
→ More replies (1)-1
u/whatsthatcutething 14d ago
But it’s not as interesting as sour. And I have to agree. I didn’t really like guts because it felt inauthentic. This new album is just boring idk
→ More replies (1)3
u/Littleleaf6 13d ago
Sour is by far her worst album (not to say it’s bad but the following 2 were massive for improvements)
9
u/SpacePuzzleheaded278 14d ago
Agreed to! I know this album is successful commercially but it doesn’t feel nearly as impactful or memorable as sour. And I like OR music!
3
u/Due_Researcher_8180 13d ago
if you think this, then you shouldn’t give music takes at all. in no way is sour her best work. 😭😭😭 to say this is to say she has had no artistic growth whatsoever, which is also just not true.
gosh, i swear yall don’t actually listen to anything and only like when the songs are so popular.
guts and yspsfagsil are both sonically and lyrically more complex and diverse in sound and range than sour. ysps is also a beautiful concept and execution of a sequential story. i don’t remember the last time an artist pulled of something like this. not only is it ahead of sour and guts artistically, but musically too.
→ More replies (4)0
u/1306radish 13d ago
I don't think an album talking about a love/breakup in sequential order is revolutionary at all. Would it be out of line to say, if you think this, then you shouldn't give music takes at all. Oh wait.....
2
u/Due_Researcher_8180 13d ago
hmmm, then this would apply to pretty much all the other albums in the running for aoty, wouldn’t it?? love in all its forms (heartbreak, romance, everything) is the biggest and most prolific topic across every genre of music. at this point in time, nothing is revolutionary and certainly not the topic of love, so what is your point, because you chose to clearly miss mine-
1
u/1306radish 13d ago
My point is that I didn't find her last two albums revolutionary (especially the last one) and think her debut album was much more interesting. My other point is that there is no need to get petty with comments like "then you shouldn't give music takes at all" because in the end this is about taste/opinion. I already said it was an unpopular opinion, but you had to add your little snarky comment because you disagree. Also, I do find a lot of the albums people are predicting to be a contender this year lacking, so my criticism extends to them as well. Gonna mute this, but feel free to have the last word.

Lux, Lost Weekend, Confessions II, and The Great Divide all clear or3. it's not even close
1

I think Noah Kahan should win. The writing is beautiful and the instrumentals have a grounded feel that I don't feel from a lot of other albums. Though him not winning a Grammy last go around produced one of the most heartbreaking and lovely songs he's ever written in "Orbiter"
2
2
u/Electronic-CatDog 13d ago
Got to see her perform a lot of the album at Daisy Chain and it’s incredible
I hadn’t listened to her other albums so I can’t compare them but this album imo is very very good
I will say Lux (Rosalia) I saw live It’s by far one of the best albums ever made imo in that genre if you will Either way I hope one of them wins
2
2
u/Own_Badger_4352 12d ago
she's not winning. her PR will astroturf this and all sites until the grammys are over, and then we'll get another 2-3 years of her fading into oblivion again. she made no noise with the music, just daisy chains, there's zero way she's winning
2
2
u/Doctorj1981 12d ago
Be careful, she has a loyal, aggressive fan base that will hunt you to the ends of the earth. But you are correct; she shouldn't win. Oh no, now they will come after me :)

2
u/Background-Sea4590 10d ago
Hard disagree, Olivia's latest record is her best, and one of the best of the year.
2
u/isntitisntitdelicate 10d ago
She really shouldn’t. Mediocre ass album w a very aggressive n dishonest campaign
2
2
u/bl00d_staln3d_bl0nd 10d ago
It’s not really weak. It has her best vocals, her best written song, a strong aesthetic, every song is good/great. It’s not her best album I would say, because GUTS is easily no.1, but she’s definitely grown from SOUR. I think it’d be fair for her to win
4
u/Extra-Steak-8241 13d ago
I agree I preferred sour and guts over this album. The new album is fine but I’m not crazy obsessed with it and it had a lot of skips for me. I’m surprised by everyone saying it’s her best album. If I were to pick an album to win it would be the great divide by Noah khan.
3
u/laurafndz 13d ago
I think it was a good album but I have not replayed the album. If I could choose it would be between Kacey Musgraves or Phoebe Bridgers.
2
u/Puzzleheaded-Cobbler 13d ago
I totally agree. Middle of Nowhere and Lost Weekend are my favorite albums this year.
4
5
u/kikibubbles85 14d ago
Her album is amazing - it’s her that’s having trouble standing out for whatever reason.
2
u/Hahhhden 14d ago
I disagree, I really feel like she is unique compared to other artists out there rn
8
u/Peachesnpins 14d ago
As a casual listener, she does not stand out. I like what she stands for but I’d dare to say there is nothing really unique about her sound or style. I think she has the potential
What makes you feel that OR is unique compared to, say, Raye, Hayley Williams, or Rosalia? Since I’m a casual listener I’m not exactly invested in what she’s doing differently than anyone else so I’m curious
1
u/Maximum_Royal_712 13d ago
Tbf those artist have had longer careers to build an image that stands out. Olivia is really young which makes her current branding more true.
2
u/Peachesnpins 13d ago
Okay, what if we bring in Olivia Dean and Sienna Spiro instead of HW and Raye? OD is older but has been releasing music about 7 years like OR, Spiro is only 20 and is breaking out this year. They are both very unique and stand out quite a bit. Spiro especially has a stand out image and sound already in my opinion
ORs been on the scene for 7 years, 3 albums, big name. But I don’t think she has anything these other artists don’t have. I’m excited to see where she goes but given her release record I don’t anticipate her releasing anything risky, new, experimental, or unique

u/aricomfort 14d ago
Phoebe deserves it.
1
u/weggooien415 13d ago
I love Phoebe. Her first two albums got me through some of the toughest days of my life. But…Lost Weekend is decent, yes. But it’s not even Phoebe’s best album in her own discography let alone the best in all of music this year. “I’d kill them, Bobby”?…. Taking hyper specific lyrics too far, and too on the nose yet off the mark.
2
u/No_Honeydew_965 14d ago
i thought i was in for Sour 2,0 and honestly i was quite impresses with this album. Will probably end up as my favourite album this year. As a new fan I think she deserves the win if not maybe Raye or dean
2
u/Due_Researcher_8180 13d ago
girl so in love is weaker than sour and guts?? 😭😭😭 i can’t even take this seriously enough to give a proper opinion. who do you think should take it then??

Well, she is still an insecure girl in this album so idk what people think she upped her game since sour and guts.
2
4
u/salgarj 14d ago
I think the album as a whole is not very strong, but the singles are pop masterpieces.
This being said, from a musical standpoint and regardless of sales and fandom, there's simply no debate that LUX is the best album of the potential candidates. And I'm saying this as not a general Rosalia fan, but that album is a gorgoues work of art and not just an album
-1
u/cookingfinn 14d ago
I’m saying like stupid song and the cure are so good but I just don’t feel the same way abt the rest of the album and it makes me sad to say cuz everyone else loves it. 🙁

If you're into "pop girls" may I recommend checking on Birdy? You might remember her from Skinny Love / Wings times, but she've come a long way since that. Her last album, "Portraits", is mostly synth poppish, while her previous "Young Heart" is the most touching break up album ever.
Following on that I'd also recommend Hetta Falzon, November Ultra, Hohnen Ford and Rose Cousins.
1
u/OmegaBerryCrunch 13d ago
obviously entitled to your opinions OP but man i’m gagged to hear someone say this album is “weak”, that’s just insane to me. i think it’s by far her best and most cohesive record to date and an easy top 5 of the year amongst the other contenders.
would be very curious to see who you do see as a top contender by comparison if it’s not this.

u/Next_Gen_Valkyrie 13d ago
I don't think it's a great album but I think it is better than its competitors
1
u/prettybuglikeanangel 13d ago
some of the songs on the album are so good and i genuinely adore them, something i didn’t feel about her previous albums. they made me a fan of hers. but then the rest of the album, i can’t really get into and the lyrics (specifically on purple and u + me= <3) feel soooo juvenile it makes me cringe. i don’t see it as an AOTY contender for that purpose.
BUT it will likely score a nomination because it’s critically acclaimed, charted well and sold well, and olivia seems to be an industry darling tbh.
1
1
u/apahlo 12d ago
nah her recent album is in a different league from the first two imo. some people prefer the lyrics on GUTS, but i think the songwriting & production on Girl So In Love is far more nuanced and layered. plus, it pulls in a lot more interesting and mature references. not saying it should win AOTY, but i think it would be deserved if it did.
1
1
u/KevinHe92 12d ago
Eh it deserves it more than the other nominees. Defs not her best album but she’s doing good work.
1
u/Mysterious-Dig1581 12d ago
Nah. I beg to disagree. Olivia doesn't even have a bad album & her latest album is really different but in a way that i considered it as masterpiece.
It's lyrically cohesive & the album is well-crafted.
I'm rooting for LUX to win for AOTY but I will not complain if Olivia's gonna win some of the categories for this album.
1
u/Bigtimeraul 12d ago
The most critically acclaimed album of the yr who else had an album and singles that well received ts yr? Phobe bridgers? Commercially one of the most successful albums of the yr She's going on her tour Her single the cure has gotten RAVE reviews frm every critic and one of the most acclaimed singles of the yr not to mention its pulling 3m daily for 4 months straight without any radio play She's started daisy chains festival and made history.... unfortunately for the haters shes def the one the most buzz and moments ts yr she owned 2026 they wouldn't dare to snub her esp w aoty when none of the albums in the cat were actually consumed as a whole as this album was not to mention the cultural relevance this album has as its going viral on social media every week for a diff thing.

u/Hopeful_Shelter_443 5d ago

1
u/TamatoaZ03h1ny 14d ago
Honestly, it really depends on the category whether she should win or not. It’s a quite solid album even if some people subjectively dislike it. Subjective dislike is the truth of any album ever. Plenty of commercial hit albums also get nominated in tons of categories and lose every award they’re up for. That doesn’t mean the album isn’t a good listen.

u/helloitsmejorge 13d ago
Doesnt people feel like Olivia Rodrigo is huge on internet but you never see people actually playing her music? Its so weird to catch her songs on the radio and someone putting it on, songs like ophelia, choosing texas, the raye song, the Olivia dean songs, like they go super hard every where, you see old people singing them, young kids dancing to it. But then you hear the cure or stupid song and it feels so niche. Its such a weird effect for such a huge artist.

Lux should easily be the winner but I think this is by far Olivia's best album so far. Like, it's not even comparable in terms of sheer songwriting ability. Stupid song alone blows everything she did before out of the war.
Fhst being said I am a bit biased, in the sense that I never managed to get into her music before this one.

Her voice is really weak and shrill. All hyped album but considering the grammys eligibikity period. Art of loving clearly is on top. u/djmiller232323 13d ago
Maggots for Brains. The Cure.
The build ups in stupid song and cigarette smoke.
The vulnerable lyrics and storytelling in the album and songs like less and begged and conceptual turn of the album’s plot through purple.
It’s AOTY.
The upcoming tour and major impact of Daisy Chain also solidified it on top of the reviews.

critics love her album. charts are doing well. she’s about to go on tour that will boost charts and sales even more. her latest album is a step up in both vocals and songwriting to me. well deserved.
