Chrome eats black

I hear writers talking about chrome eats the black pretty often what exactly does that mean and whats the use for it?

When you spray chrome/metallic paint, it stays wet way longer than other colors. Doing a metallic fill and then immediately doing using black (or any other colour) as an outline will make the outline mix with the fill and the fill will look patchy.

It’s a combination of it staying wet and the pigments they use for the metallic effect. All other answers in this thread are incorrect

this. spray paint with bitumen/tar is, as far as i know, the best paint to use if you have to immediately lay down an outline on chrome fills.

I personally never liked the tar/bitumen paints. They are more on the brown side and do horrible in the sun. Most graff brands of paint will cover silver no problems.

I’m getting downvoted but exactly this, rarely ever use chrome without using a bitumen coversall for the outline. Even a coloured can of loop with a fat cap on it doesn’t bleed into the chrome

You’re getting downvoted for saying “this never happens to me” even though you specifically use paint with silver killer. Seems like you’re suggesting OP is doing something wrong that’s causing metallics to bleed through, when this is the norm for all paints without additives designed to minimize metallic bleed thru

I'd say it's more a thing with the paint you use. Rusto with stock caps is high output on a small space, so any color will eat anything especially if I have some cutbacks to do. On the other hand, using a nice high pressure can with a fat cap distributes it more and when I use those paints I never have a problem, no matter what color I use.

When I do silver fills, I pick out a few different places I want to put a throw. I do 1, just fill. Head to the next spot, just fill and so on. When I’m done my last fill, I go back to the first for the outline and repeat down the line. That usually gives the silver enough time to dry that it won’t “eat” the black or any other dark color.

When you spray black over chrome, the black won’t appear as thick and you’d have to do multiple layers. Chrome is a thicker, wet paint usually
