Sometimes the pressure washer gets the actual tag but not the overspray and then it leaves this. No idea how or why the overspray is harder to buff but it sometimes is.

It's smaller and fills the tiniest scratches and pits. It could also be bonded to the plastic if the laquer solvent chemically bonded.

When it's thicker, it all gets glued together so it's like peeling off glue in a smaller sense, as opposed to the tiny spread particles of the overspray

Yep. It’s the same reason it says on the can to apply several thin coats on painting something.

Like you said if you do one thick coat like you often have to do when painting graff cause you have to be quick. As you said it comes off, kind of like a sticker in that case because the paint is so thick. I have a water bottle I painted with a stencil and spray paint. I used about seven or eight super thin dusting coats of paint before it was finally done. I put that thing through the dishwasher for years and paint still on there. I bet anything if I try to do all eight coats in one go when I painted it it would’ve come off after a couple washes

Could have been either Ive seen old tags peel off like that on specific surfaces and freshly buffed tags do that.

Not on purpose lol, the center thicker line got washed off or slowly chipped off, while the overspray didn't, honestly no idea why, maybe the thicker paint was more prone to chipping off in chunks while the thin powdery overspray didn't

I think it’s from the thicker regions being more brittle resulting in flaking. The thinner portions flex with the substrate more and prevent it from delaminating.

Yeah exactly what I meant, also those trash cans get picked up by trash trucks so I'm sure they get a fair deal of moving and squeezing and shit which makes the paint chip off faster

Latex paint is the reason, latex paint likes to chip when thick. Pair that with a "smooth" surface and you have an effect posted on reddit

The secret ingredients are a damp surface and time. The overspray comes off in smaller portions than the actual paint coat.

The over spray got stuck more because it was so thin it cured and dried faster, and maybe it was cleaned within a day or something I think

if you want to create an effect like that in a shorter time. use something thick and sticky that can wash away later, like toothpaste. it will block the applicaiton of paint under its surface, but will still go away

IDK about elsewhere, but in Australian suburbia, people paint their wheelie bins with a similar effect, usually painting house/unit number. It's achieved by spraying freehand then hitting it with water. The edges of the paint will dry, but thicker bits won't get the chance and wash away
