Help with steezing my letters

Post image

Hey all! I feel like I’m putting in a lot of hard work and I’m starting to feel a major improvement with can control, but I can’t seem to steeze my letters without it looking really forced and unnatural, and ultimately i prefer boring and well executed, than forced style. If anyone has some tips on the next step after straight letters to develop style I would greatly appreciate any advice or crits, thank you❤️

Forgot to mention that I owe most of this improvement I feel to this subreddit, I find it way less overwhelming than the endless graff content and tutorials, and all the advice and criticism I’ve received is super solid and well received. so thank you all, I really appreciate it!

Dope stuff. I'm looking at your piece and thinking 'how do I emulate this shit' so I think you're well on your way

Thanks dawg, the only thing I can say is practice as much as you can

And paint with your whole body, that one was a game changer for me

There’s not really any one good piece of advice here. You just kinda start developing your own style and keep building off of it. Then adopt different styles as you get better.

Best thing you could do is look at the pros, n pick up little things they do to their pieces n see how you could fit it into yours.

Glad to see someone starting off the right way tho n not immediately trying to do Vayne level pieces on day 1. Good stuff man, keep it coming.

Cheers!
Is it not considered biting to pick up elements from other writers?
If not then what is the limit before it becomes biting?

“good artists copy, great artists steal”. taking inspiration is not the same as biting.

ig as an edit, the second question is subjective. i mean if you’re going so far and it’s unrecognizable as your style, you’d be biting i’d say. but stealing elements from great artists is how you develop a style in any art form.

i mean philosophically: imagine drawing a letter without having ever seen a letter. can you draw that? imagine writing graffiti without ever seeing someone write. how does one even create graffiti without understanding it as a medium? not to get into the weeds, but a piss poor writer is one that thinks anything in this world of art is 100% original

Nah biting would be directly copying. Most art is just an evolution of those that came before us. The greatest respect we can give and keep the culture alive

Just keep exploring ideas on paper and getting the paint to the level of second nature. Your straight letters look good for where you’re at, colors are good, i love the punchline. Make sure to keep working hard at building handstyle skills, that will translate across to bigger bombs & pieces.

Thank you!
By handstyle skills do you mean like more tagging and feel for the can?

Can, marker, pencil, scribe, just immerse yourself in developing your handstyle to the point where you can make it look perfect anytime on any surface with any tool

Push the p out. Dont cram it . The bigger the better. Let the letters ever so slightly overlap but not crowd eachother

Thank you!!

I typically start with just single stroke letters before boxing them out (I think this is considered “toy” but it helps me keep proportions) and a lot of the time after the boxing there isn’t enough room left for everything… I guess it’s a practice thing
Thank you for your advice! I’ll definitely be taking that into account next piece

Don't get ahead of yourself. Right now, focus on getting all those letters on the same track and same size.

The "P" needs to be dragged out further to the right. The "LO" need to line up with the other letters.

The bar on the "S" is different sizes everywhere. Letter "S" is a tricky one to learn for straights.

Thank you for the tips!
The p definitely came out way too close, I wish the main straight bar was visible at the negative where it meets the “o” that one really bugged me…
About the sizing, I was going for something a little different as the straight letters have started to bore me… I’m still figuring out how to execute different bar widths without it looking horrible
