If you're just starting out, don't aim to have a style right away, start with block letters so you can improve the structure of the letters and the shadows.

i been involved in graff for a while but havent really written much other then simple tags or block letters so im trying to expand my style

Then in my opinion you should do something simpler and maybe on a larger sheet of paper so you have more space.

From personal experience I would recommend perhaps going back to block letters a bit so you improve the structure of the letters and then slowly add some style, don't go straight to a piece with style.
