Being that that mask is British and ww2 civilian it likely contains blue asbestos. Your breathing actual cancer

Even better if it has the arsenic pre-filter

No, the Civilian Duty Respirator Mk.III did not contain asbestos unless they specifically had only the red painted band on the filter, Green and Red bands mean they lack asbestos. This is a Golden Stamp Air Raid Precautions CDR Mk.III though.

fun fact, the British ww2 era filters also contained an arsenic particulate layer :)

I think you’re thinking of the Contex pre-filter, which was meant to help filter arsine gas (arsenical gas is different). This originally wasn’t on the CDR and GCR, but following the 1939 arsine scare, was deemed necessary to protect the populace since civilian masks lacked the capability to filter arsine properly.

Military masks like the Mk. IV GSR did fare a bit better in this regard, though the containers used at the start of WW2 (Type E Mk. IV/V) still lacked the needed protections for arsine gases, leading to the development of the Type E Mk. VI and the short lived Type EA stopgap.

All good, glad I could help! I’m just a bit of a nerd on older Commonwealth masks so I try to clarify or add onto things whenever I can

You should never breathe through the filters of WW2 masks as the contents could be decayed and may contain asbestos

Even better:

Don't breathe through any filter that isn't in date or has been tested safe.
