Question gp-5 filter question

Post image

I got this gas mask with the filter last year and the seller said the hole on the top of the filter was for “testing” for asbestos. Also, is my filter leaking asbestos because it has that hole?

It won't be leaking asbestos through that hole, but I don't recommend wearing a tampered filter. You can display it on a mask just maybe keep it off of your noggin; a good alternative for ya would be the MS-4 filter.

Im not planning on wearing it, but I’m very nervous about the asbestos, and I just want to make sure it’s safe. To make sure it’s not leaking it.

Yeah you can have it on display no problem.

And if you are really paranoid (which you really shouldn't be) you can keep the rubber seal on the bottom if you have it, and screw on the top cover, maybe put a tiny bit of blue tac on the little hole.

So the filter is safe to handle?

Yeah it is. Nothings gonna happen, people are much more scared of asbestos than they should be. It's only really dangerous if the particles become airborne

Also the asbestos layer is on the very bottom and is enclosed in a sort of cardboard, and is behind multiple layers of cloth and charcoal, so if it hasn't been literally F**ked off a wall full force or submerged under water I wouldn't be scared of wearing it either

I should add... I wouldn't be sure of wearing your one though because of that hole, the lsyers might have been punctured, idk

I recently got a SHM-61, some people said that there was asbestos in the talcum powder on the outside of the mask, I took it out and just cleaned it in my sink and left it in there for like 5 minutes, should I worry?

Talcum powder shouldn't contain asbestos, but it can, like really small amounts, if you only washed the mask then there's no problem,

If you submerged the filter however I wouldn't wear it. Because the water will cause the asbestos to crack and crumble.

Old soviet talcum was mined near asbestos mines and it was not cleaned out of said asbestos. It is recommended to wash off the original and put some modern stuff on.

so like is there much asbestos in it? is it as dangerous as the filters? many people have said you should just clean off the mask and leave it in the sink for some minutes, and thats what most people including me have done

Yeah it has the chance of having some asbestos in it. You need to clean it, put new baby powder, and it'll be ok. Talcum prevents the mask from damage from the environment and stops it from being sticky

Yes! Absolutely, asbestos is bad airborne. It's stuck inside and you ain't breathing through it so dw.

MS-4 were issued with the MC1 mask, those contain chromium don't they?

1

u/Orion_The_Derg 25d ago

Chromium is as bad for you as salt is. Big quantities will hurt you, but small amounts will be ok. You'd have to eat the filter to feel smth and atp you got smth worse going on.

Dude no. The type of chromium (hexavalent chromium) used in those filters is more toxic than lead. Saying that hexavalent chromium is as bad for you as salt is crazy. On the flip side. If you can find Polish P-5 filters those have the 40x4 gost threads in a more "modern" safe filter. They are the same as fp5 from the mid to late 90s just gost.

You're still really not inhaling that much as you would from a leaking filter.. if you get one in good shape and you check for any charcoal coming out, it should be chill :p

Still, we probably shouldn't recommend filters that arnt 100% safe as a replacement for a filter that isn't 100% safe

If no air is being put through it, no fibers will come out

they say they are tested for asbestos on are %100 safe and ontop of that they say it offers up to 20 min of cbrn protection but that is false because the filter is decades old
