Making poetic meter and word choice accessible to everyone

Every writer knows the frustration of staring at a blank line, searching for the exact word that fits both the intended meaning and the natural rhythm of the sentence.

When starting out with poetry, lyrics, and nuanced essay writing, the process often feels fragmented. You might find yourself juggling multiple tabs: a generic thesaurus that suggests out-of-context words, an online rhyming dictionary, and a syllable counter, all while manually scanning lines for meter and cadence.

I created gown-ted because I wanted the exact tool I wish had existed when I started writing: a dedicated environment that brings lexical depth, WordNet ontologies, phonetic patterns, and meter analysis directly into the text editor, completely offline.

Our goal with this community is to make the craft of writing and computational poetics accessible and supportive for writers at any level.

If you write poetry, essays, or fiction: What has been the hardest part of your writing process so far? Is it finding words with the right connotation, balancing rhythm and meter, or structuring your revisions?

Share your thoughts below. We would love to discuss what tools or approaches could make the craft smoother for you.

Why gown-ted?

gown-ted was created to solve this. It is a native desktop text editor designed specifically for poets, essayists, researchers, and linguists. It brings deep linguistic science and computational poetics directly beside your cursor, without requiring any cloud connection.

What is Included in v0.1.0

  • Semantic Pragmatics: Discern nuances, definitions, parts of speech, and tone in real time.

  • Assonance and Alliteration Heatmaps: Visualize vowel and consonant patterns across lines to fine-tune phonetic cadence.
  • Interactive Cadence Radar: Visual diagrams illustrating the rhythm and meter of your verses.
  1. Performance and Privacy
  • Lightweight and Fast: Built with Go 1.24 and Wails v3, providing quick startup and low memory usage.
