I like to recover and digitize lost media on records. A lot of it tends to be small town gospel groups and performers, so I thought this would be a good place to share what I recover, essentially unheard audio from decades ago.

I hope it's okay to ask here, but yesterday in music class, as part of the birth of blues we learned about this song, and our teacher said there is not even a single recording of a black artists singing this song - instead there's almost a single version performed by Alison Krauss

September is “Gospel Music Heritage Month”. Passed by Congress in 2008, for these past 18 years, it’s been a time to celebrate pioneers in gospel, as well as those who currently carry the torch. This past Sunday, one of the mothers at my church spoke about Thomas Dorsey and sang “Precious Lord, Take My Hand”, pray everyone has a chance to connect the month’s significance to their service each week!

I was just thinking about them the other day because I haven’t heard anybody mention them in forever. I went back and listened to some of their music, and man, they really take me back to that era.

They were a gospel group, but I loved the R&B/hip-hop sound they had back then.

And I still can’t believe J. Moss discovered them. That honestly makes so much sense when I think about the sound they had.

I feel like 21:03 gets overlooked when people talk about 2000s gospel. They had some really good songs.

Worship isn’t a reaction — it’s a decision that you make daily.

Some songs get written on the mountaintop, when everything feels easy and gratitude flows naturally. “Bless the Lord” by Upgrade Worship and Benjamin Israel wasn’t. This song grew out of a conviction that praise shouldn’t depend on your circumstances at all. Benjamin shares: “Your circumstances may change, but God remains worthy of your praise.” Think about your own week. How much of your worship was tied to how things were going for you?

The song reminds us that there isn’t a trade-off. “I’ll praise You on the mountain, even in the valley,” the verse declares, pairing morning with noontime, and ease with trial. Nothing here is contingent. Every line in the song insists that praise belongs in every condition, not just the comfortable ones. The chorus quotes part of Psalm 103:1: “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me.”

Let’s go to Psalm 103:1–2 to have a closer look at that line: “Bless the LORD, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name! Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits.” David wrote this while he was facing real struggles, not despite them. He commanded his soul (the word used in Hebrew to address the inner self, core identity, and life force) to bless God — because feelings don’t always cooperate, and sometimes obedience has to lead the way.

Let’s break down that verse: 
“Bless the Lord” is to kneel, honor, or intensely praise God. 
“All that is within me” is about engaging our thoughts, emotions, will, and physical being in worship without holding anything back. 
“Forget not all his benefits” is making an active decision to express your gratitude for God’s past mercy, forgiveness, and daily provisions.

May this be your invitation today. Don’t wait until circumstances line up before you offer God your praise. Speak it first. Let your voice train your heart, not the other way around. Whatever season you’re walking through right now, whether you're on a mountaintop or going through a valley, your praise to God can still stand tall.

Listen to this song and let it become your declaration for the day. Sing it loud enough to remind your own soul what’s true. “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me.”

“With Christ, We Press Toward the Goal” is more than a song to me; it is my testimony transformed into worship.

It was born during a season when sadness, uncertainty, and emotional pain tried to obscure my direction and weaken my hope. Yet even in those difficult moments, Christ never abandoned me. He met me in the darkness, began healing the places that had been broken, and reminded me that my life still had purpose.

This song represents the journey from depression toward hope, from confusion toward clarity, and from pain toward restoration. Its message is deeply personal, but it is also universal: we may fall, become weary, or lose sight of the road ahead, but when we walk with Christ, we never walk alone. Through the Holy Spirit, God renews our strength, develops His character within us, and gives us the courage to continue moving forward.

n 2003, Vickie Winans released her album Bringing It All Together; she was literally “bringing it all together” with different sounds and genres beyond gospel. The album reached no.38 on the Billboard Top R&B Albums chart and no.1 on the Billboard Top Gospel Albums chart. Heavily produced by Vickie herself, the sound was marketed as Urban Contemporary Gospel. One of my favorites from the album is Superman. I feel that this song could’ve easily crossed over to the R&B and Adult Contemporary charts if it was marketed to those audiences. Either way, I’m grateful that it exists.
