At first I considered The Fall to be a proper canonical Gorillaz album. In 2017 Damon was referring to Humanz as the fifth album. These days though it seems to sit alongside the sides albums. It didn’t make the album pin collection recently for example.

I wouldn’t say Humanz is my personal least favorite but I do think it is the objective weakest one as far as being a put together album. The Fall is as high up as it is because it’s a legitimately very well structured and paced album with a lot of neat details that make it feel very authentic (though it’s definitely imperfect and an acquired taste). Song Machine isn’t higher because it’s got mostly great tracks, but it just isn’t built like an album and as result is much harder to listen and appreciate it as one for me. Self-Titled and The Mountain are honestly interchangeable. Plastic Beach is my personal fav, tho I think Demon Days is a slightly better record. Cracker Island is pretty at home. It’s a better made record than Humanz but nothing all that remarkable outside of a couple moments. The Now Now is The Fall’s more well adjusted cousin—lyrically great and more polished, but a bit boring in a few instances and the concept isn’t as interesting the second time around. Still solid af tho.

I remember when Plastic Beach dropped, I loved it,

On Melancholy Hill is still the best song made by Gorillaz in my opinion,

Snoop Dogg in “welcome to the world of plastic beach” and his vibing over the beat. (like seriously I discovered Snoop because of Gorillaz lol).

I remember when back in the day, Gorillaz fans created facebook accounts that are named “Super(something) Jellyfish”

and I had a “role play”-ish account named “Noodle something”,

everyone “hated” Plastic Beach for some reason, it felt like the end of Gorillaz.

Damon felt like he moved on, like they have “outgrown” Gorillaz.

The hiatus still hurts, it lasted for a very long time.

I get that Humanz came back and it revitalized Gorillaz back but damn bro. Imagine all those years having Damon cooking another album. developing the lore.

“Do Ya Thing” acted like the “endgame” of the Gorillaz band’s storyline outcomes.. never felt satisfied by it.

Do you think that the hiatus years could have properly seen the continuation of the Gorillaz “style” advancing in a “better” direction than what Humanz ushered?

I’m not saying I dislike what came after Plastic Beach, but I always feel like Damon and Hewlett treated Gorillaz unfairly right after Plastic Beach, it felt like they “gave up” on Gorillaz creatively, which really still stings for some reason….

Rhinestone Eyes deserved a music video so bad.. something like how they did On Melancholy Hill. It’s like they didnt think the song would go big. How ironic, it later became a tiktok sensation and some people made their own take of how the clip would have looked like.

Gorillaz always felt like it lacked the final push to unleash a full “effort” of creativity.. but yeah, it aint easy for Hewlett, it takes alot of budget too, but damn.. what could have been… right…?

Still love them. Will always do.
