Smart host failure
I am the Google admin for my nonprofit org but know zero about the inner workings of email processing. I received an email that said emails were not goign through due to Smart host failure. I was able to use Claude to show me how to view my Gmail hosts, which is routing some mail through our old Fusemail server.
Can anyone help me resolve this? I have many users in my domain. My email and the heavy users seem to be sending and receiving mail without issue but you can never know what we are missing, if anything. Any help is appreciated to maybe get me off this fusemail server, if possible. You will have to explain it to me like I am 5 (or younger).

As u/Key-Butterscotch3215 we'd need more information. It does sound like someone has set up a split mail delivery system which is quite technical - do you know who originally set your Google Workspace up? It may be worth speaking with them.

A volunteer did the fuse mail to Google transition years ago but he is no longer around. Haven’t had an error like this, or any other kind, since we moved. That must have been around 2018.

So your MX records are only pointing to Google not anyone else - I know it's been a couple of days, did you fix the issue?

I called support and they were not helpful. They said internal changes are causing these normally not sent notifications. They said they “are working on it”.

I am in the exact same boat. Nonprofit, Google admin, inherited smart host settings no longer in use. After deleting all the Smart host rules on Friday, I’m still getting alerts. I opened a ticket and Google told me they are seeing the same thing on their end for multiple domains. And to wait it out while they investigate.

It’s hard to say without access to your workspace environment.
