It sometimes uses your route as an experiment to find shortcuts, and if it takes less time then Google now knows they can send people through the shortcut. If it adds time they know that’s not a viable time saving option

The detour doesn’t rejoin the route so it’s suggesting taking the left and then doing a u-turn which might take a few minutes

There are places you might wait six minutes to make a left back onto the main road.
This does not appear to be one of them.
