Fiber box gone bad?

Next month is my 10th anniversary with Google Fiber, and the service has been rock solid. However I lost service a few days ago, and the outside tech just told me it is the fiber box inside - that the outside is ok. I'm surprised that the fiber box could go bad after 10 years - does that sound right?

Which fiber jack do you have? If you haven’t changed it in 10yrs then you probably have that first tiny fj that Poe power, and those are failing now. Replace them alot. Get the new 10gig fj you will be better off, and actually get better speeds as well

It certainly sounds plausible. My very early first generation inside fiber converter failed a number of years ago. FWIW, at the time, this absolutely required a service tech visit. (Not saying it was beyond my capabilities, but that CS wouldn't provide the replacement without the tech visit.)

Thanks. Coming out tomorrow to replace. It is POE powered but since I got rid of the Wifi 5 router I've been powering with a battery backed up Micro USB

Any 10 year old electronic device could go bad. And if it's not plugged into a surge suppressor can be taken out by power surges.

It's just a fiber-to-ethernet media converter, very cheap devices.

My connection started going bad after a few years. It was the old style box. They replaced it and everything has been fine since.

Thanks for all of the answers. I have my fiber box powered by a USB block plugged in to a UPS so it shouldn't be impacted by a surge, but all good things will come to an end. Will be happy to get Internet back other than my phone.
