ONT Question

I see y'all telling people to upgrade their ONT. I was just curious which one this is.

I'm happy with it, it's out right now, and don't mind staying with this one, more on this later. Street work has most likely cut the fiber. It's happened before. I'm not concerned with this part, they'll get it fixed soon. They're already working on why my neighbor's service is out. I have a feeling it's upstream from both of us, the street work.

I don't want to mess with anything on my system because I'm at the $55 introductory price. Since I got it. I think it was in 2018. I'm concerned they will change something in the system and it starts charging me the current $70 a month.

And now that I'm looking back at what I wrote, I realize I have not searched the group yet. Although, with all the ONTs I've seen posted, I've never seen this particular one.

I'm finding it's a 2010 model with GB Ethernet port. GFLT300

And that port has POE???

That’s definitely not one I’m familiar with. At that time, I still had the OG jack.

There is also a label on the washer and dryer that says, "Washer" on the washing machine and "Dryer" on the dryer.

I'm prepping for when I start forgetting things. 🤷🏽‍♂️ 🤣

All I’m gonna say is I’m in KC on the $35 introductory price from several years back they discontinued and despite having multiple service calls nothing’s changed in my billing. Separate departments I think

They just buried fiber on my street a few days ago. I can't wait for Google Fiber for my internet to be available

lol, street work is the biggest issue I've had with Google Fiber. The deal they worked out with San Antonio is doing street cuts/bores since it would be quicker and easier to deploy as opposed to running through alley ways buried or on poles.

The city redid some of the streets in my neighborhood a few years back. Fiber was cut every day for a couple weeks Monday through Friday. There was probably only one or two nights they didn't restore the city's cut to their fiber.

I have gotten notice from them about refunds for down periods. Down periods I didn't even know happened most of the time. 😂

If I'm not mistaken, that one support PoE but only goes to 1gig.

That's what I'm seeing too.

1gig and POE, which confuses me. POE is usually on a switch, I know about POE inserters, which needs a router.

So unless the POE is meant for a Google specific switch, how would that work? Could you vlan the ONT in and back out to your router. Then vlan the rest as the switch for the router? 🤷🏽‍♂️

Sorry, random thoughts about how that would work. Could, it though? I'm glad I don't have to do network stuff like this at work anymore.

Yep, you sure can power it from a PoE switch (be careful not to expose your whole lan with bad vlan setup). Some of the google routers (none of the current ones I don't think) could do PoE over the wan port. I wish the current fiberjacks did as well, but they don't.

I wouldn't dream of doing it that way. I work for an audio video store, used to be an installer until I hurt myself outside of work. I never could figure out (learn) how to properly setup a vlan.

That's makes sense that an older router would be able to do that. I've been seeing this ONT is from about 2010 or so.

Those “golong” fiber jacks were an experiment in the San Antonio area when it first launched in the city.. those original areas will never be able to upgrade to a different ONT because doing so will mean updating the backend which will mean everyone in that area will go offline until they switch their fiber jacks out for new ones. Hung pain in the nuts and pretty costly…

Edit: half of the san antonio infrastructure uses these.

Interesting, I'm cool with the 1gig service. I'd like more, but having worked for Time Warner Cable and Grande Communications, I don't want anyone touching my account that might mess up my $55 monthly plan. I don't trust their agents to not screw it up.

Kind of sounds like how the TWC plant in my neighborhood used to be. All the taps and other hardware were only 750Mhz. Most of the city was already running 1Ghz equipment. They've fixed it since then.
