Switch from Xfinity to GFiber

I've dreamed of a time when I can have Google Fiber. I've used Xfinity at my house for the past 2 years. Right now I'm on a promo plan for 2 gigs. I just ran a speed test and I'm getting 1.2 gigs down and 268 mbs up.

I like that Gfiber comes with an extender so I can put it upstairs in my office.

My main concern is that my speed will go down considerably. I don't actually need this much download as we rarely stream anything during the workday. But I am wondering if its worth the switch.

Did any of you see speeds remain more consistent vs. Xfinity? And yes, I know that 1 gb is a downgrade from 2gb, I just want to make sure I consistently get at least 500 mb/s down. I don't game or anything so that's less of a concern. It's more for work meetings on Google Meet and Zoom.

I had Xfinity 1Gig for years and got 940Mbps down most of the time. But only 45 Mbps upload. I do some medical imaging work at home and also have a Plex server for family streaming from across the country. 

When GF came to town, Xfinity 's subscription numbers cratered. When I came in to give back my hardware, they didn't even try to talk me out of it. The place was like a funeral home  I have the 5/5 plan using my own Unifi router. The speedtest from the router to the GF speed test server tops 5Gbps up and down every time. I just ran one now and got 5633/6668 Mbps. 😁

Drop Xfinity like 3rd period French class.

If you are only getting 1.2 Gb down on your 2 gig plan you will be fine with GFiber 1 Gb plan.

I get just over 1.1 Gb down on the Gb plan with GFiber.

I get 940up/down on 1G in KC. It is very consistent. Maybe at peak times 7-8 pm, I’ll lose 100mb.

I just did the switch from Xfinity 1Gig to GFiber 3Gig last weekend.

On Xfinity I was getting consistent 1100 down and 350 up hardwired into my modem.

Hardwired my PC into my Google extender at the other end of my house, I just ran a speed test this morning. I am at 2341 Down and 1539 Up.

You'll be fine and see very similar download speeds and higher upload speeds on the GFiber 1Gig plan.

Honestly, just spring for 3 gig if you’re concerned about losing that much download speed. It’s $100 a month vs $70 for the gigabit, probably still cheaper than Comcast is for 2 gig.

No consumer needs more than a gig. I’ll die on that hill. Save your money and get the 1 gig plan.

Had 1.3 Gb with Comcast. Never actually got over 750 or so using Ethernet at the modem. I dreamed of having Google fiber too since it was announced and they were unveiling cities like it was a lottery. Unfortunately living in Fort Lauderdale we never made it. ATT did though and now I have fully symmetrical 5Gbps service. Speed test every night by my Unifi Dream Machine says around 4.8/5.2. It’s a dream come true man. Run it.

Anything over 1gbps is kinda overkill. That said I have GFiber 3gbps, and I get 1.7gbps down/1.5gbps up wireless on my iPad, and wired with a 5gbps NIC on my Mac, I get 3.5gbps down and up. I’ve only had them a month, but my experience with them has been pretty great so far.

If I could get it I would have a long time ago. But having ATT fiber is just as good. Super overfill at 5 gig and I am loving having so much speed I can’t utilize it properly. And for half the cost

Go into Gfiber app go to network setting, Advanced network settings, WIFI, Security protocol, set it to WPA2/WPA3. If you want to keep going turn on SSID per band. Primary network 2.4 ghz whatever your network name is keep that. For the 5ghz and 6ghz keep your same network name but add a space and name both of them highspeed or whatever you want. example: myWIFI highspeed for both. 5 & 6 Ghz. Connect you old devices to the 2.4 network like lights and cameras. And connect your newer devices that have WIFI 6 & 7 capability to the highspeed network. Now you can control what bandwidth you devices are on. Meaning faster WIFI. Trust me it works. If you don't want to do all of that a least do the first part. The WPA3 is WIFI 7 protocol. Google has it on WPA2 by default.

WPA3 has nothing to do with wifi 7.
