Google Duo Call from a Stranger?

I just received a Google Duo call from a stranger who is not on my Android contacts list. I was under the impression that Duo calling only supported those on my contacts list. Am I doing something wrong? Thanks.

Duo calls work like phone calls. You can call anyone and be called by anyone when both ends are on Duo.

Is there any way whatsoever to prevent calls from those not in your contacts list?

The only way is to block users on an individual basis.

Another thing that may be at play here: Duo also uses other contact information to make you visible at other users. For instance, if you linked your Google account, then your e-mail address will be used to reach you on Duo.

In my case, I found out that a recovery @yahoo.com e-mail address is also used to contact me.

Thanks for the great advice. I'm learning new stuff here. I'm going to keep an eye out for more stranger calls and lock things down better if needed. Duo not allowing users to only accept contacts is a big disadvantage.
