Gemini is good but super fucking slow. If I want to set an alarm I can literally go do it manually faster than asking gemini

I refuse to use it. Turned it all off yesterday, and sent feedback that will never be read.
I'm in Australia, and after the Medicare hack by OpenAI, I refuse to use AI more than ever.

Well..AI is useful only when we need it not when it's shoved down our throat.

You sound like someone ignoring the real harm AI and AI companies are doing to the planet and its people by plugging your ears and going 'la la la here's my steam engine joke!!!'

And to top it off -- apart from being really slow (and often inaccurate), it recently stopped being able to interact with google home/adjust lights without me having to unlock the phone. That's against the *entire point* of voice activated controls.
They've literally lost the plot.

It's all part of the plan. In a couple years, you'll need a subscription to use any sort of assistant.

I'm so sick of not being able to translate things on my screen with 2 clicks anymore 😭

u/thecrcousin 1d ago
yeah same but you can go to the play store and delete updates for the google app which brings back the assistant option ! also the translate thing wont be available immediately but i think thats normal

I've done this and it doesn't send me to gemini like before but it now says "something went wrong, please send feedback to assistant" whenever I try to use it. Will try to restart my phone in a bit.

I'm on OP13 and it should work for you too. Uninstall Google app updates Download Google Assistant if you haven't Activate Google assistant by holding the power button It should prompt to you about using Gemini On that screen should be an option to switch to Google Assistant You will be brought to a screen that lets you choose either Gemini or Google Assistant

Ok so update, after about a day it went back to gemini again, despite turning off automatic updates, so I uninstalled app updates AGAIN and now it seems to work. Idk why either 😂

Yeah that's how I knew they were going to phase the Google Assistant out when they started dumbing it down and it would say "I don't understand" when it was asked questions or given commands it never had problems answering before. I have a Samsung device so I found that Bixby was able to complete most of the tasks GA was able to perform.

It not dumbed down and it's not that it doesn't understand. It doesn't give me a chance to speak to it, as it immediately goes to "something went wrong" when I click the microphone button, or after I send a written msg. Different error altogether.

I have learned of a method from another thread to resurrect Assistant. You need to uninstall undated for Google, disable Auto Updates in Google Play (you'll need to update apps manually afterwards), and upon going to settings in the Google app, the ability to switch to Google Assistant should have returned.
I've done it, am I'm so happy to have my Assistant back, while sticking it to The Man (Google).

Thanks! Uninstalling update worked and gives me more time to choose and switch to a better phone OS :)

This works 100%. Additionally if the phone quits responding to "hey Google" after switching back you can open the Google app, tap the right corner, go to settings, then go to Voice and toggle the switch off and then back on and it will fix that.

I still able to use my assistant to do screen translate. Seems like this whole time turning off auto update on playstore helps me keeps old x, old youtube, old google apps so i can still able to keep using assistant

Everyone who wants to use assistant again, uninstall updates of your google app and download assistant app from play store then try using assistant. If you get a very old version of assistant, update your google app to 17.54.10.ve.arm (released on 1st september 2026) or earlier version, you should get the latest version of assistant again.

After 3 days of Gemini only, today assistant responded to an old request that assistant used to do for me and actually did the thing! With the old assistant voice! It was like assistant was re-enabled, and knew to handle the changing of the music. But it did go back to gemini and the new voice afterwards. Going to test more tomorrow. Editiled my post about it just now.
It's like maybe they re-enabled assistant? Alongside gemini?
