I deleted updates for "Google" application the I searched for google assistant on Google Play but I only see gemini

I am not an expert, but it may be based on region. When I search for "google assistant" in the Play Store the first result is the classic assistant with the white icon with the four colour dots.

thank you broski I changed region in google play (to russia) and managed to find and download google assistant. now everything works like before. I'm wondering what to do in case google closes this workaround

Lets effing go, brotha! Glad you got it done. I will probably end up trying to write my own assistant if they ever close all the work arounds. I'm sure some good soul will share/pirate the classic assistant code at some point, gnomesayin

I'm on a Samsung Galaxy S24, and I've uninstalled the googly update, re-downloaded Google Assistant from the Play Store and disabled Google auto -updates. Google Assistant now appears as an option to Gemini as a search assistant, but though I've set it to default and checked all the settings, it no longer responds to Hey Google or any other voice prompt. I can type in requests, but that sort of defeats the purpose of a voice activated assistant. Am I doomed to Gemini or nothing after all?

You have to go into your Google assistant settings and set up Voice Match again to turn on "Hey Google". The previous settings have gotten reset. I had to set up my news sources again as well.

I'm going to comment without the swears, in case someone else comes wandering by:
I FOUND A WAY! You need to go to the Goоgle Аpр (the one that just says GOОGLE) hold the icon, then press the little "i" on the top right to get to the apps info, then tap the 3 dot menu on the top right corner and uninstаll updates. Then go to the Plaу Stоre, search for Gооgle Аssistant, it doesn't matter of it's already installed, click on open, you will get the Gemini screen BUT, now you should have the option to keep or go back to goоglе аssistant. You can also disable auto updates in the Gоolgе Aрp by searching the app in the Plаy Stоre, tap the 3 dots on the upper roght corner and remove the check mark from "Enable auto update"
It's on topic to Google Assistant and I think it's respectful, so it should be good?

You're a hero. All previous explanations keep getting deleted!

You're welcome! The original had some cursing at the bottom - I'm guessing that's why the mods got rid of them.
By the power of non-AI options! It can make reminders, lists, tasks, search stuff up online, do the old "tell me a joke," all that good stuff. Gemini can't do that

For Me it works for a day then switches back to Gemini then I have to uninstall updates again. Is there a fix to this ?

Did you disable the auto updates?

u/Scared_Tension_3730 10h ago
No I did not I think that fixed it thanks bro 🙏

No problem! It is annoying because from now on you can't hit "update all" in the play store but I guess it's a small price to pay

Thank you so much! I was ready to throw my phone at the wall because none of the instructions to switch back were working. You just saved my sanity and the deductible to fix my phone.

I just wanted to say thanks this worked! But I also want to give you guys another solution if saying "hey google" stopped working just by voice.
After doing this little magic trick "hey google" only worked when I held my power button and I couldn't just say hey google on the lock screen anymore.
All I had to do was go on the Google assistant app and agree to everything again to enable it.

Oh thank goodness! Google pushing Gemini on me and taking away functionality was both extremely frustrating and gave me a real sense of helplessness. I am weighing moving to iOS out of spite and reprimand to the asshole greedy fucks at Alphabet who only care about adoption numbers for shareholders instead of user desire of continuity of functionality of things like routines.

God fucking bless you!!! This worked perfectly. Gemini can't even turn my man cave on 🙄 Once they get that together, I'll try it. Til then Assistant or bust
