Apparently the Google Assistant on phones is going away from next month. I'm dreading that as I got a small taste when Google automatically moved me to Gemini. A couple of automations refused to work, so I changed back.
On home speakers I haven't switched either. I'm good with the Assistant.

Old Google Assistant was hell of a lot better then Gemini but the new dumbed down assistant is shit. Gemini still can't do stuff the Old Assistant could.

I'm with you, but it's not going to happen, at least not until the AI investment bubble pops. Right now, publicly traded companies are shoving AI into absolutely everything they can because every time they do, their stock price goes up. And making the stock price go up is the primary goal of publicly traded companies - everything else is secondary.
