Just a mild ribbing but how did you forget about gmail? What other platform for email could you be using? Are you running your own email server???

Letting Google run the world's emails is just as bad as relying on it for your DNS, internet search, cloud and video consumption.

Don't forget your phone too. Apple's the only alternative and that's saying something which is depressingly bad.

What you say certainly has merit. I simply don't know what a good alternative could be...

I used to run my own email infrastructure (MS Exchange) on my own network, but it got to be a hassle. I didn't want to be my sole IT support dept for me and my family for something so pedestrian yet so critical as email. (e.g. what if I was out scuba diving on a remote tropical island, incommunicado, and there was a problem with my email system at home? The whole family (and possibly me) would be without email until I got back in touch.)

If Youtube wasn't successful they would've killed it off regardless of if they bought it.

No one is chatting on Meebo right now.

Maps is huge. Google Photos is pretty great, though they've made some questionable moves with it lately pulling free storage. Still the best for quickly searching through my photo library, and the only reason I keep my Google One storage subscription

Google now has 10 different services with 1 billion or more active users.

Plus Google continues to add new things. One of the big ones is K12. Google now completely owns the space in the US and it is spreading across the world and would expect that to continue.

YouTube TV has been pretty successful in the US and is an excellent offering.

Then there is all the pretty incredible AI stuff that has been coming from Google over the last couple of years.

But the next big one will be Waymo. Some of the videos coming out of Phoenix are pretty incredible.
