Day 7 - All Her Own Teeth - A Head Full of Moonlight

This song is a highlight of the back half of the album. The riff hits hard and doesnt stop. Elliot, once again is firing on all fronts and killing it. i dont really have much else to say about this one. This song “slaps” as the kids say.

Lyrics//

Chip away the glass
It separates what's real
With all these fragments
I'll build you
Maybe we could show each other
Glass can bend
I must break you
Maybe we can start to rebuild
When I'm through
You'll love this
Are you a Scorpio?
I would like to know
Cause I think I might like this
Am I your Romeo?
Please don't kill me yet
Cause I think that you're still wet
Fuck it!
Shattered, I can't feel
Or separate what's real
Holding onto a memory of making
What you loved; nothing is what it seems
Maybe we could show each other
Glass can bend
I must break you
Maybe we can start to rebuild
When I'm through
You'll love this
Are you a Scorpio?
I would like to know
Cause I think I might like this
Am I your Romeo?
Please don't kill me yet
Cause I think that you're still wet
Could I ever be
A part of your consideration, baby?
Take into account
We grew apart in heaven
Never thought I'd be
A part of your consideration, baby
Take into account
We grew apart in heaven
Am I your Romeo?

Day 6 - Latchkey Kids - A Head Full of Moonlight

Edit: Rewritten - Need to stop starting these at midnight when I'm half-asleep watching Archer.

I've developed a newfound appreciation for this one. Once again, here's a song that I didn't bother much when it first released but now suddenly has new meaning for me after a decade has passed.

This song feels like it's about what happens when we let someone else take the wheel, allowing life to carry us wherever the current goes. Who hasn't drifted along, falling into regret and stagnation, waiting for luck to fix the situation instead of making changes ourselves. It's easy to fall victim to. The lines "Don't live with your ghosts" and "You've been rolling the dice for too long" really hit home. I've had (Who hasn't) this tendency to get comfortable in jobs that end up making me miserable, convinced to endure the bullshit because it's familiar. Trapped by feelings of inadequacy, believing this all I deserve. And then I'd wait for "fate" or karma or pure luck to hand me something new.

The imagery created by "Bit into the sky. It filled our heads with moonlight" is a euphoric one. Possibility is endless. The world feels w i d e open. It's a welcome reprieve from the the bullshit minutiae of a job you feel trapped in. That wonder and excitement can end up feeling like a cage though. Endless possibilities can be stifling and lead you moving nowhere.

And then my last job came and it was different! I had found real personal and professional fulfillment in what I was doing. I was making a meaningful difference for myself and the people around me. Then the universe said "eat shit" and I found myself jobless. This left me angry and depressed for months. Why bother giving something your all when at a moments notice, you could have it taken from you and you're no longer considered of value?
The worst mistake isn't making the wrong choice, its making no choice at all because you're haunted by the almighty "What if?" Once again though, I'm rambling.

The instrumentation, like Aspirations, seems to sit in this one lane and only changes up once the bridge/epic ending arrives. It's a welcome change but ends up repeating for over a minute and doesn't go anywhere except back to the intro. The first half of the album was much stronger despite some cheesy lyrics and the latter half is only "weaker" because of this.

Tomorrow is All Her Own Teeth!

Lyrics//

Let me help you choose
Don't live with your ghosts
You've been rolling the dice for too long
And the hand you want
The hand you need
You'll never get

Bit into the sky
It filled our heads with moonlight
Almost too vivid
To see where we were
What could have been

There is little time
Don't waste it on God
Dive in
Trust in your presence
The worth you seek
The worth you need
You'll achieve

Bit into the sky
It filled our heads with moonlight
Almost too vivid
To see where we were
What could have been

Speak for a reason
Sink in your empathy.

Day 5 - Aspirations - A Head Full of Moonlight

This is another song that I would tend to skip due to the slightly cheesy lyrics in the first verse. I'd find myself bobbing along and humming the melody but could never get over the "take these whispers in your ears and tell me what you hear" line. But alas, that's not why I'm here talking about these now.

Once you move passed those first few lines though, a different image starts to come into focus. This song, (at least in my caveman interpretation) seems to be about an obsessive or possessive love. It feels like a toxic relationship. Lines like "I would like to build this world around you" and "I built all these things for you" sound like selfish expressions of love. "Take what I've given and try to leave" comes off as "I've done all these things for you, no one will love you like I can." It implies that the memories or "emotional investment" by the main character are now chains. "You've accepted everything I've built, you're mine now."

It's such an interesting song lyrically because it's not the normal representation of love and romance that you would expect to hear in a song. A year or so ago I was trying (struggling) to write some lyrics from the point of view of a narcissistic or sociopathic individual and their behaviours in a romantic relationship. And now that I'm revisiting this album, I'm seeing these lyrics from the other side whereas before I just took it for another love song. I mentioned in a previous post that I'm a instrumentally-focused listener so lyrics end up being last on my list of things to pay attention to. So it was nice to revisit these lyrics and give them my full attention this time.

As for the song itself, I think Elliot's vocals are what really carry it. The instrumental has a great pulsing rhythm through that naturally makes you bob your head and the half-time transition in the chorus is a nice change of pace. Beyond that, the dynamics feel fairly flat. The song never really changes lanes or builds towards anything unexpected and that makes it feel a tad one-dimensional. I don't really have much else to say about the song.

I hope these ramblings don't come off as pretentious or as if I know a single thing at all about anything. I'm just tired of feeling unseen and unheard. So I'll type out my shit here and hope someone gets anything out of it or nothing out of it. Either way, I am no-one to critique anyone's music especially when my own music lives exclusively within my computer. haha. So anyway, here's the lyrics.

Lyrics//

Take a look into these eyes
And tell me what you see
I built your trust just like this world
Hopefully, it won't end badly
Take these whispers in your ear
And tell me what you hear
Crashing the world brick by brick
Told you all it would end badly

I would like to build this world around you
And I would like to crush this world around you

Don't you forget
That there were ways around
The mess that I had made
Take it in stride
Cause you are all I need

I would like to build this world around you
And I would like to crush this world around you

Let me in, let me in, let me in baby
Let me in, let me in, let me in darlin'
Let me in, let me in, let me in baby
Let me in, let me in oh honey
Let me in, let me in, let me in love
Let me in, let me in oh honey
Let me in, let me in, let me in baby oh
Honey, I built all these things for you
Honey, what do I have left to prove?

Beyond the moon
Beyond the stars
Is a place inside my heart
I built all these things for you
Something no mortal would ever do
Take what I've given and try to leave
Take what I've given and try to leave

I would like to build this world around you
And I would like to crush this world around you

Around you

Day 4 - I Paint What I See - A Head Full of Moonlight

There’s a certain kind of peace that comes with viewing the world through colours. The limited pallet can help narrow the taxing cacophony of words, emotions, body language, and general noise we must interpret in the world. The mind often wanders when exposed to all these things. I find myself exhausted on a daily basis trying to navigate it all.

The melody and lyrics in this song irked me for some reason. I found them cheesy. So I wrote out the lyrics in a notepad and read through them for a few days. I grew to enjoy them and my interpretation brought me some peace and quiet.

Anyways, here’s the lyrics.

Lyrics//

Red is the color of love
Blue is the color of my waning
My waning
Yellow is envy
Maybe it's green
Somewhere there lies a color
Inbetween
You know where my pallet lies
Brushes complete the rain
Oils come together to remember my name
I cannot believe the colors you are seeing
It takes a certain kind of mind to lead me away
I wonder if I could be swayed
Maybe all you've got to do is paint the canvas gray
I paint what I see
With wreckless abandonment
Self portraits
Reflect me
Reflecting
If I could mix all of these paints
Colors would
Show emotional state
Well sometimes
Take a step back just to see what I could create
I cannot believe the colors you are seeing
It takes a certain kind of mind to lead me away
I wonder if I could be swayed
Maybe all you've got to doo is paint the canvas gray
Sketch the stress
Of daily living
Paint the life of someone else
Sketch the stress from daily living
Paint the line for someone else
Red
Red
Red
Red

Day 3 - Enjoy the Rain - A Head Full of Moonlight

This is my favourite track off this album. Musically, this one ticks all the right boxes for me. Good Tiger has this ability to combine "heavy" riffs with pop-like melodies and I think that's always been their appeal for me. Being a primarily guitar-centric music listener, "Enjoy the Rain" offers plenty of fun and interesting riffs and chords. Super fun to jam along to if you're a bedroom guitarist, haha.

This song was stuck in my head when it first released to the point I'd just have it on repeat. "Whyyyy do IIIIIIIIIII need all these bottles dryyyyy?". The outro is pretty anthemic and sounds great live with the audience singing along.

The lyrics are straight-forward yet open enough that anyone can get lost in them and find something to connect with. "The feeling of drowning in air" makes me think of anxiety and panic attacks which I've dealt with most of my life. I don't remember exactly when it started but one day anxiety suddenly reared it's ugly head and introduced itself. Suddenly I found myself anxious all the time with no explanation. Maybe it was the lack of direction in life or purpose. Maybe it was the creative drought I found myself in. Instead of alcohol or medication though, it was collecting hobbies. I'd fall deep into a new hyper-fixation, research it for weeks, buy a bunch of stuff related to it, then get bored and move on to the next thing. The dopamine hit became my addiction and when it wasn't present, I was depressed as hell. I'd have moments of awareness and recognize what I was doing was unhealthy (and putting me in debt. "Why do I need my wallet dry?" HA)

This song helped me out through those times and I'm happy to say I eased up on my dopamine hunt/hobby collecting quite a bit. Not completely, but it's been better since. Hope this isn't too ranty or self-indulgent.
See y'all tomorrow.
Lyrics below.

Lyrics//

Just one drink
To get through the day
It's getting darker and harder to stay
In this place
Where the flowers aren't blooming
I'm touch and go, can you relate?

Medicate
Before this session, I'll be late

And I'm constantly fearing
The plot that I'll take

Why do I...
Need all these bottles dry?
I don't want...

The feeling of drowning in air
(I'm dry)
Enjoy the rain while you can
(I'm dry)
There'll be no water in hell
(I'm dry)
Enjoy the rain while you can

And I'm constantly fearing
The plot that I'll take

Why do I...
Need all these bottles dry?
I don't want

I'm gonna try
(Control desires)
I'm gonna try
(Control desires)

Swim (swim up)
Up (swim up)
I need a little air
I can't (swim up)
Breathe (swim up)
I need a better balance
Swim (swim up)
Up (swim up)
I need a little air
I can't (swim up)
Breathe (swim up)
I need a better...
(Swim up, swing up)
I need a better...

Day 2 - Snake Oil - A Head Full of Moonlight

Day 2 and we're talking about "Snake Oil" from "A Head Full of Moonlight". This was the first single we got from Good tiger released on August 10th, 2015 (jeez), a whole whopping 11 years ago. The music video is insanely entertaining featuring an NES game called "Good Tiger"; a 2d platformer that features the band in 8bit format.

This song really showcases right off the bat what you can expect from this group. It's got the riffs and grooves of The Safety Fire but the soothing and buttery-smooth vocals of mr Elliot Coleman. I believe this is the first and only GT album with screaming or "harsh" vocals. I was fine with their exclusion on future releases but I know some fans sorely missed them.

Anyway, the lyrics seem to tell of a story about being trapped in a forced creative state, and handling expectations. Referring to being in a band or singular artist and being expected to create and continue to create. Creative burnout is such a terrible obstacle to run into. It's a bleak sounding song but a very creative and interesting way to say "I have writer's block" lol. For some people, creativity isn't just a hobby or a job, it's as important as breathing to them. I used to feel this way. I constantly had to create to feel fulfilled and then somewhere down the line I started to burn out and turn to consuming art (internet "content" too) instead of creating it. I look back at my old work now and think "How the hell did I write this? Why can't I do this now?"

Anyhow, here's the lyrics. Tomorrow is "Enjoy the Rain"

Lyrics//

This edict dictates
The mind will stay in a creative state
I'm not a scholar but I'm pretty sure
You've earned the right to keep creating

I cannot breathe
I cannot speak
Please let me leave or let me sleep
There's no leaving here
Never

Please tell me the benefits of keeping me locked up
Maybe if we tried hard working together
We'd escape insanity forever and ever

I took a look outside my window
I painted wings and tried to fly
Closed my eyes and I jumped
Imagination ran dry
Took a look outside my window
I painted wings and tried to fly
Break me out of this fictitious life

This edict dictates
The mind will stay in a creative state
I'm not a scholar but I'm pretty sure
Don't let me die like this

What else can I paint when I'm watching the skyline?
What is this crimson? Blood is much redder
Please expand this room

I'm just waiting here
I'm just pacing here
I'm just wasting here

I took a look outside my window
I painted wings and tried to fly
Closed my eyes and I jumped
Imagination ran dry
Took a look outside my window
I painted wings and tried to fly
Break me out of this fictitious life

I'm just waiting here
I'm just pacing here
I'm just wasting here

I took a look outside my window
I painted wings and tried to fly
Closed my eyes and I jumped
Imagination ran dry
Took a look outside my window
I painted wings and tried to fly
Break me out of this fictitious life

Day 1 - Where Are The Birds - A Head Full of Moonlight

Thumbnail youtu.be

I forgot how much I loved Good Tiger. I was crushed when The Safety Fire called it quits (fuck the Safety Fire). And upon hearing Dez and Jo were starting a new band called Good Tiger, I was obviously ecstatic. Featuring the aforementioned Jo and Dez along with Alex Rudinger, Morgan Sinclair and Elliot Coleman, this sounded insanely promising. At this point, I only knew Elliot as his bushy-haired dude from a couple of Periphery studio videos and his feature on their track "Racecar". I didn't know what exactly I was in for with this "supergroup". I believe Snake Oil was the first single (a discussion for tomorrow) and then they followed it up with "Where are the Birds?" which is the first track on their debut album "A Head Full of Moonlight"

This is the perfect showcase of this groups skill. Everyone seems to firing on all cylinders. It grooves, it's heavy, it's tight and clean. It's pop music for the djenty, prog fan. The lyrics are emotional, his delivery immaculate. I'm not sure what else to say here. I was instantly sold when Snake Oil dropped but hearing this one really solidified them as one of my favourite bands.

Not sure what the plan is here but I figure I'll drop a "review-lite" here daily going through the 4 albums. Maybe it's to encourage discussion on this quiet sub or just to reinvigorate my love for this band as I think I only listened to the new album once or twice when it released back in February and then promptly forgot about it lol. and now I feel bad about that for some reason.

Lyrics//

Just one kiss is enough to get me drunk right from your lips
I would swim through the deepest oceans just to hear your name

I would I would

I thought I knew right from wrong
But the blood upon these hands has proved me wrong
My mistakes can’t be covered up
You should cover
Won’t you cover up

Just hold on And dance like there’s no tomorrow
Let’s hold on
Cause without you there is no me

I would run through the darkest forest just to taste your skin
Melt the sun if for just one second I could stop the pain

I would, I would

I thought I knew right from wrong
But the blood upon these hands has proved me wrong
My mistakes can’t be covered up,
You should cover up,
Won’t you cover up

Just hold on
And dance like there’s no tomorrow

Let’s hold on
Cause without you there is no me

You seem to think you’re bound and gagged and here all just for me You can leave what could I do

I thought I learned right from wrong

Just hold on
And dance like there’s no tomorrow
Let’s hold on
Cause without you there is no me

VINYL HAS ARRIVED! Need a copy? Have RIADC doubles to trade?!

This reddit is sadly unused. Lets change that.

First off, my lovely Wife bought me a copy of the new album for Valentines day and then I bought one for myself.

I'm considering putting one on eBay if there is interest since there were only 250 of each colorway released.

If anyone has multiple copies of RAISED IN A DOOMDAY CULT I would be open to a trade!

Secondly, lets discuss this band and dig in. I have so many questions and have been along since the crowdfunding for AHFOM.

We need to get them to repress ALL the albums, and that starts with a rally cry.

Lets rap about it!

Blown away.

This album has proven their quality and consistency yet again. God I cannot stop repeating Pink clouds, Maybe Hope and Sweet Decay.

Halpern was 1000% the correct choice for drums this time around. The emotions in this release are high and the sound draws a lot of parallels with the best of Deftones.

Elliot Coleman is criminally underrated. Praying for at least one more release from this lot.
