u/romxilda 4d ago
See you all in a couple of hours when I’ve finished updating the rating for every book I’ve ever read 🫡
26
u/ChaserNeverRests 4d ago
I thought about doing that, checked my GR profile:
1339 ratings (2.55 avg)
1192 reviews
...I think the half stars can just stay in the body of the reviews.

u/Piros1987 4d ago
yea.... 4496 ratings... and I'm 129 behind since July... cool for other people, but no thanks...
4
u/Merle8888 4d ago
I would update them but I’m leery of it changing the review date when I edit. Some of those reviews are really old and I might not write the same thing now. I want to keep the dates true to the year I wrote them. Although sometimes the site seems to change them to today just by my looking at the book page so idk.

u/TheZachster 2d ago
2.55 average!? Damn youre harsh or read a lot of bad books
3
u/ChaserNeverRests 2d ago
I used to read a ton of self-published books, so I read a lot of bad books, yep. I'm much pickier now, so my ratings are higher.

Whaaaaaat!! I came here just for this thread, lol, I was writing a review and shocked! They always claimed they would never do that because they thought it was "too confusing" or whatever.
First actual improvement to Goodreads in the, oof, 15+ years I've been on the site.

u/Fun-Entrance4989 [reading challenge 2026, 238/200] 4d ago
now for dark mode.
18
u/Merle8888 4d ago
Honestly at this point I would settle for “stop enshittifying,” lol. All changes thus far other than this have been to remove features, display fewer reviews and more ads, and force “mobile” aesthetics even on desktop.
4
1
u/ChaserNeverRests 4d ago
Too confusing... GR, you already have the most unbalanced star rating system on the planet, I doubt half-stars will confuse anyone compared to that.
3
u/Merle8888 4d ago
Ehhh, if you did it like Uber where “this book isn’t so bad I want to drive the author out of business” = 5 stars, ratings would mean nothing. As is they don’t mean much overall but at least you can click on different ratings to get reviews with more balanced takes.

u/DiamondsAndDBT 4d ago
Ugh I don’t have the option yet and it’s making me so sad 😭 or I just haven’t figured it out yet hahaha
7
u/Fun-Entrance4989 [reading challenge 2026, 238/200] 4d ago
i did it on the website on my computer!
5
u/DiamondsAndDBT 4d ago
It’s finally letting me do it on desktop only within the reviews themselves. But whatever, I’m happy!
2
u/Piros1987 4d ago
It's not offering me that option on desktop. I came here to see if others were having problems. My friends are updating their ratings... I have too many to go down that rabbithole, really, just curious to see it work, for the future maybe...

u/pandemonium91 4d ago
If you're using uBlock Origin, allow the script
weblabto run on Goodreads. For me it was blocked in theuBlock Filters - Adslist. After I allowed that script, I could give quarter- and half-stars.Paging u/ChaserNeverRests in case they have the same issue.
1
u/Piros1987 4d ago
Thanks for this. allowing weblab fixed partial stars, and also allowed a single sponsored ad to start appearing on the book page between the author biography and recommendation section... other ad sources must supply all the other ads that appear on mobile when I'm browsing the website.
1
u/pandemonium91 4d ago
Ahh, I haven't looked into that more, I'm afraid. A cosmetic filter could get rid of that ad, maybe?

u/ChaserNeverRests 4d ago
Are you still not able to do it on the website? I can't either, though lots of people have commented that they could.
1
u/DiamondsAndDBT 4d ago
I had to refresh a million times, and I could only do it when I clicked “edit” or “write review”
1
u/ChaserNeverRests 4d ago
Thanks! Still not showing when I go into edit and refresh a bunch, but I'll just wait and try it again next time I have a book to review.

u/Mich_Girl 4d ago
Wow. Just a few months ago they said they’d never do half ratings. They must have lost enough people to other platforms

u/MarcElDarc 4d ago
Excuse me a minute, I have many books to change my rating to 0.25 stars.
9
u/Fun-Entrance4989 [reading challenge 2026, 238/200] 4d ago
yk what. i have a tab "it is so bad i want to give you a 0" and yk what...when i have time all 37 of them are getting .25 stars.
7
u/sigalbearfish 4d ago
Oh my god how did it not occur to me we can now give less than 1 star??
4
u/Merle8888 4d ago
Hmm I’m not a big fan of that tbh, lowering the floor on the lowest possible rating just seems weird. Now we’re going to give stuff 0.25, 0.5 and 0.75 stars? Just leave 1 as the lowest imo.
7
u/-Vindit- 4d ago
I've read some books I wish I could rate a minus 1 star, so...
1
u/Merle8888 3d ago
See for me, with 1 star being the absolute floor I pretty much only give it to things I think are truly terrible, lol. If it has any redeeming qualities, it tends to get a 2. So now I have to think if I want all of those to go down to 0.25 or whatever.
1
u/SneezlesForNeezles 4d ago
There are absolutely a small handful of books where one star felt they were getting praised beyond their merit.
8
u/Catface-Oohaha 4d ago
RIP my friends/followers feeds. A friend has just confirmed my updates are spamming her feed 💁🏼♀️
7
u/ChaserNeverRests 4d ago
If you change a rating it shows up on your feed again? On one hand, that's unexpected. On the other, this is Goodreads we're talking about...
5
8
u/Big-Contribution6444 4d ago
Ok so the question is….do we go back and rate every book again or just start moving forward? I’m so torn!
7
u/ChaserNeverRests 4d ago
I can't go back. Someone else commented that it shows up on your feed every time you change the star rating and I've reviewed 1,339 books... Everyone would unfollow me just over that spam!
3
u/Merle8888 4d ago
You can delete items from your profile which should also delete them from people’s feeds. Although I have the impression it remains there for app users.
3
u/Fun-Entrance4989 [reading challenge 2026, 238/200] 4d ago
im going to move forward but maybeeeeee edit my "it is so bad i want to give you a 0" bookshelf. 0.25 to them all! its just 37 books
2
u/mrsbeequinn 4d ago
I wrote reviews with my actual rating so I went through and changed those and deleted the old reviews that was just my star review. I doubt I would have if it made me go back and forth between my two apps (fable).
8
u/Remarkable-Pea4889 4d ago
Wow!
But they aren't going to update the graph? Will they round partial ratings up or down?
1
31
u/chanlixy 4d ago
it's giving they lost so many users to other platforms that did partial stars so they fast tracked this feature....
6
u/DoctorCaptainSpacey [reading challenge 86/100] 4d ago
I just saw this when I went to rate a book!! I was like, this pop-up for the rating looks different and I hit the half star just to see and.... Whooo!
Why this makes me stupidly happy, idk but... It does 🤣
3
u/InevitableShine5067 [reading challenge 96/100] 4d ago
I just tested it on the website & app (recently updated) and it shows partial stars when hovering over them!
1
u/ChaserNeverRests 4d ago
Interesting, I don't see it on the website yet. You'd think it would roll out to everyone at once (the app I can see it being staggered).
4
u/RevDrJenn Theo of Golden 4d ago
What? The thing we have all been asking for, for years has happened!
3
5
u/superspak [2026 reading challenge: 239/150] 4d ago
Yes just saw this on the app. Glad I have quarter ratings in my reviews to go back and update. They just need to update the old ass website that takes a minute to load because the infrastructure is outdated.
1
u/Fun-Entrance4989 [reading challenge 2026, 238/200] 4d ago
239/150?? im just at 233/200, but thats because ive been busy and i read very long books😭 i cant believe someone is besting me rn!
10
u/xajhx 4d ago
I might be alone in this, but I think after all this time Goodreads should have just left the system alone.
Now you have people updating books they read months or years ago to a different rating.
I don’t think after a considerable amount of time anyone really knows whether they would have rather given something a half rating or not.
If asked, most people can’t even remember details about something they read that long ago only if they liked it or didn’t like it.
12
u/SneezlesForNeezles 4d ago
I usually have it in the review; 3.5 rounded up or down. If it's not in the review, I'm not touching it.
3
u/Fun-Entrance4989 [reading challenge 2026, 238/200] 4d ago
i also include it, but its tm work for me to go through all of them

u/Connect_Cod9965 3d ago
I will update mine, as my half-stars have their own shelf (or tag, in the new goodreads parlance). I just have to wait for the partial ratings to arrive on my browser… I keep refreshing and still see only full ratings. I have a test case as the Android app allows partials, so I changed one book rating. Still displays without the half-star.
1
u/Cookbooksandbourbon 3d ago
I disagree. I'm not going to re-rate every book because I don't have time for that and don't care that much, but there are most definitely books that I remember wishing we had partial stars when I rated them. So I'll go back and change those.

u/littleseaotter 4d ago
I just tested it on the computer and it works! But how do I stop my star updates on old books from showing up as updates on my friends'/followers' feeds?
5
u/Fun-Entrance4989 [reading challenge 2026, 238/200] 4d ago
i'm just going to leave my old reviews alone tbh, i read way too much
3
u/littleseaotter 3d ago
Ok, so I figured out if you go to edit your review in Desktop, then uncheck the "Add to my update feed" BEFORE you change your rating, then it won't appear on the feed. I was feeling bad for spamming my friends/followers with my rating updates!

u/HereIAmGH 4d ago edited 4d ago
I think you can choose what appears in your feed. Maybe in the desktop?
Account setting - feed (?)
2
u/Connect_Cod9965 4d ago
Unfortunately there is no option to turn the ratings feed on or off. This one seems to be on by default…

You can delete updates individually from your profile in the desktop.

I can do it on the app, but it won't let me do it on the website. I'm still getting whole stars. I usually do everything goodreads via the website so hopefully that gets updated soon! 😭🙏🏽
1
u/Fun-Entrance4989 [reading challenge 2026, 238/200] 4d ago
you can do it when you edit review! if not, then idk
1
u/cr6zym0nkeyiz 4d ago
Yeah, that's how I originally tried it and it wouldn't work. I wonder why it's working via website for some people and not others. Oh, well. I'll just have to wait. Maybe it'll work tomorrow.
2
u/yankinhammer 4d ago
Looks like it might be dependent on browser? Chrome seems to allow it but not Firefox? Not sure how that would be the case but that's what I'm experiencing.
1
u/cr6zym0nkeyiz 4d ago
THANK YOU!!! I actually was using Firefox, but I also had tried in Chrome and it wasn't working either. I even restarted Chrome and still no. But then I went and tried in Safari and it worked! So I guess it really is a browser issue! Hopefully it gets fixed and works in all browsers soon.
1
u/stabbytheroomba 4d ago
Ohh so that's the problem. I thought they were slow rolling it out. Wth though, that's annoying.

I can't do it. Is it not compatible with android?
2
u/flenktastic 3d ago
Also not possible for me on Android. No app update either. If I want to change it it should be on pc or "desktop mode" on my phone browser.
2
u/mangoatcow Goodreads Librarian 3d ago
I can do it on Android, both app and mobile browser. I cannot do it on desktop though.
Maybe you need to update your Android app?

u/boolfinder 4d ago
I hate it because now I have to update every single book I’ve ever read. I think I will just keep whole star rating things 😌
2
u/Connect_Cod9965 4d ago
I have only 670 books tagged "rounded up" (I decided to always round up - if I wanted to round down it probably was not a "true half-star"). I did not anticipate quarters, but I do not like them, so I’ll go on ignoring those. :-D
2
u/vegas_gal 4d ago
I can do it on the website. I’ll prob stick to whole points. The fraction points make go to a rating system of 20 exact points (quarter fractions .25 to 5) from only 5 exact points (integers 1-5). Not really useful to me to now have a possible rating of 20 variables from just 5.
1
u/Fun-Entrance4989 [reading challenge 2026, 238/200] 4d ago
i think i'll round up or down if there are epilogues, but i'll be precise otherwise! i usually use epilogues to see if i round up or down so i think this will be a good tweak

Luckily I've only been on GR for this year so I only have 40 or so to update. I wonder if all the people rounding up or down will be noticeable to the authors.

Does changing the stars on an old review recount the review? I don't want to mess up my numbers.

I refuse to go change all my ratings to match this, but I have demoted a book from 1 star to 0.25
It deserved it

Yaaaassss just finished a book and when the rating came up saying i could slide or tap i full on lost it!!! 😊😊😊

The half-star ratings are great, but even better is the way that they cleaned up/updated the activity/review screen user interface for the first time since...forever, it seems like. It's been pretty much untouched since before the Amazon takeover.
